My last post was a small teaser about the travel destination I am right now and I think it is time for the announcement of the mysterious city :)
Actually there isn't much mystery into it, we are at Nafplio, my partner's hometown and a beloved destination!
When it comes to the formation of the modern Greek state everything started here. It is the most common thing to see signs on the buildings at the old part of the town informing you that they housed the first parliament, the first high school, the first ministry of some kind and generally something "first".
Maybe the vague concept of Hellenism, meaning the connection between the ancient and the modern Greeks, goes millenniums back in time but what we call Greece today started 200 years ago and this town is a living museum of its first steps.
Not all the reminders are pleasant. As you walk in the narrow scenic roads you may pass the spot of the murder of the first governor of Greece (one more "first"). And many more dark pages of our history are also written here.
Nafplio is now one of the most visited destinations in Greece. The proximity to Athens, the well preserved old town and the abundance of facilities make it extremely popular, some times too popular for my taste :)
Today is one of those days that the place is literally flooded by visitors but I have found a quiet hour, early in the morning, to walk and take a few pictures. I hope you like them :)
This is my contribution to the #SublimeSunday, instigated by @c0ff33a , as well as the #beautifulsunday, hosted by @ace108!
