The car wrecks of Solitaire, Namibia (8 photos)

DSC_01.JPG

These car wrecks are found in the Namib Desert at a place named Solitaire. It's just a small, dusty desert town in this sparsely populated area. It's often used as a stopover when driving from Sesriem to Sossusvlei. When I was here, that's what we were doing as well. We started in Swakopmund by the Atlantic Ocean and spend the whole day driving to Sesriem. We only stopped here to refuel before we drove on.

This little settlement consists of a gas station, Solitaire Lodge (which actually has 25 rooms) the Tsondab general store and the Mc.Gregor's Bakery. While the driver was taking care of the petrol and other supplies, we had coffee and an aple pie. We also had time to have a look at all the car wrecks.

I do not know for sure if the cars were only left behind when they no longer worked, or if they were simply placed here. I understood that Solitaire is associated with these cars, so maybe they are an attraction in themselves. They gave us a great photo opportunity while having this break in this desert land. Namibia is considered to have the oldest and driest desert in the world. It really was an amazing landscape.
