Three Tune Tuesday #168 .:. Radiohead — pt.2

1

The whole last week I spent deep in the rabbit hole... a splendid journey back in time, in 90-es, hit me all of a sudden! I grabbed the recently published 'Radiohead: Climbing up the walls' - fantastic album by photographer Tom Sheehan, which accumulated his photos of the band from 1992 to 2003. Some stuff included into the album was well known, but 2/3 pictures turned out absolutely new to me, never published, with cool backstage stories added.

So, it was absolutely out of the question what I should present you this time. Ofc it have to be Radiohead and nothing else! 😎 Previous #ttt post devoted to this band is here.

Radiohead - Just (Do it to yourself)

(live at MTV Most Wanted 1995)

This one is very old, from 1995 epoch - before the internet arrived to our land! As the legend has it, the song appeared as a competition between Thom and other guitarist (Jonny Greenwood) - who will add more chords to the song? The result was... quite convincing. Promo video, created by director Jamie Travis, is considered to be one of the best music videos ever. 😉 Perfect stuff to convert a new Radiohead fan, lol.

Radiohead - The National Anthem

(from 'Kid A' LP, 2000)

This album was the first Radiohead album that rocketed to N1 position in US charts; and this tune, as I remember after 24 years have passed, impressed me most on the album at that time. Here is a little quote from Thom Yorke about its recording: “On the day I said to the session jazzers, ‘You know when you’ve been in a traffic jam for four hours and if someone says the wrong thing to you, you’ll just kill ‘em, you’ll fucking snap and probably throttle them? Any tiny spark and you’re going to go off, and you’re in the midst of two or three hundred other people who are in exactly the same thing. I wanted them to play like that, like, this fucking close to going off, lynching or killing". And thats how they recorded it.

Radiohead - The National Anthem

(official unofficial video; released on TMGLMOAT DVD, 2006)

No promotional videos were produced along with said album, but after a few years the band released a memorable fan-made compilation of videos and shorts, where this tune got this funny (and, yeah, a bit trashy) coverage. And know what? in my opinion - the clip absolutely nailed it!

Radiohead - Anyone Can Play Guitar

(Live at the MTV Beach House; 1993)

I could say so much about this; but in brief: if you havent seen this - you cant pretend you understand what Radiohead is/were about. This is the essence. And, yeah, this is exactly the famous performance where Thom jumped off into the pool after ending the song.

I hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze.
