A couple of days ago, @sketch.and.jam and I had a brief musical conversation, which induced my today's blog. He is a fan of metal rock, that's obvious to me. 😜 There is a place in my heart for such music, as well - but it is occupied completely by one band ... which is being widely known among devoted fans. However, not everyone is aware - so I decided to give it an extra PR; today's name is: Therion.
Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal rock band created in 1987. Along with the more famous Nightwish, Therion is considered to be the oldest band in the symphonic metal style and one of the founding fathers of this style itself. The name itself means “The Great Beast” in ancient Greek language. But let me skip the usual bio part - any wiki article will help you with this better than me.
Of course, any band means certain people. Therion members list have changed quite significantly over its history. Therefore, their music have changed too. From dark death metal with elements of progressive death, Therion's music has transformed to symphonic metal and even 'gothic pop', lol. Such mutations, of course, always drop off part of the fandom overboard - you cannot please everyone at the same time. However, in my opinion, the most valuable ingredients: drama, dark energy, a claim for a complicated symphonic sound - have not disappeared from this music.

Today my daily playlist includes only one Therion's song - the opening track from the 1998 album 'Vovin'. It lasts 7 minutes, please feel no hurry, you can’t listen to it “skipping” towards the end. Try and savor it slowly. In general, the whole album is wonderful, I can't stop listening to this masterpiece, I re-listen to it pretty often.
The second tune of my selection is from the next album - partly due to it has a built-in subtitles, thus you can get the general idea of the stuff what they are singing about (its really hard to decipher these choirs on your own).
Therion - From The Dionysian Days
For me in particular, the time I became acquainted with the band, the early 2000s - coincided with the trilogy of albums Vovin / Crowning of Atlantis / Deggial (1998 / 1999 / 2000). Back then I gave them quite a lot of listening, and of course some imprinting might have happened; listening to this music today, I travel back in that time. In such cases, it is not possible to say objectively that you love it precisely because it is the best - or there are some other influencing factors mixed in there :)

One way or another, a decade after the Millennium, the volume of therion in my blood exceeded the permissible concentration, and subsequent albums:
- Sirius B (2004)
- Lemuria (2004)
- Gothic Kabbalah (2007)
- Sitra Ahra (2010)
- Les Fleurs du Mal (2012)
...didn’t arouse much interest in me, I missed these releases and listened it a lot after... The music seemed to me diluted, a repetition of the old stuff (“lets remove the sleepers from the traveled path, put them in front, and move on along the same rails”). Having climbed to the peak, it is impossible to stay there for a long time or forever - a descent inevitably will follow... but will there be new ascents? this is not guaranteed.
On the other hand, it seems to me that this violated the integrity of the original mystical concept; successive throwing in different directions, attempts to “knead and prepare” music from the ground ingredients of Norse mythology... Lemuria... Kabbalah... - I regard this as a trivial use. There must be one truth. You can’t constantly change it, throw it away and take a new one - like horses used and driven to death. I hope you understand what I mean.
My blog would be incomplete without a few words about the early albums (which some fans consider the best part of the band's creative legacy, especially the debut album). Listen to any track from the album 'Of Darkness' (1991) - they are all the same in my opinion, hehe - and you will see that the group indeed has gone through a musical evolution... at least in terms of their sound.
Therefore, I will not recommend you their later works... however, for the record, I cannot but note: since 2000-es Therion began performing with a symphony orchestra, began produce cool live video versions and clips; although the music feels to be a bit secondary and maybe not so impressive, it still worth to give a look - for the sake of the visuals.
'Miskolc Experience' (2009) was released as DVD and can give a decent impression of the power and energy of these songs performed alive with symphonic orchestra. Have a look.
And last but not least: design and packaging. A competently packaged product, addressed to its target audience and with good marketing and advertising budget, works wonders! In 1994, Therion signed a contract with the major German label Nuclear Blast, which dramatically raised the group to a new level - the budget increased, albums began to be recorded in the best studios in Berlin, numerous session musicians, opera singers, and so on appeared. The artwork for the albums released by Nuclear Blast cannot be compared to the first releases - it looks like candy! A completely different product, the major league.

Все знают Nightwish и знаменитого финского соловья Тарью Турунен - а вот имя Therion вам что-нибудь говорит? Нет? Тогда пристегнитесь, поехали!
Шведская симфо-метал-рок-группа, созданная в 1987 году, наряду с Nightwish считается старейшей группой в стиле симфо-метал и одними из основателей жанра. Название взято из Книги Апокалипсиса и означает «Величайший Зверь»... но позвольте мне пропустить обязательное био — любая вики поможет вам в этом лучше меня.
Конечно, всякая группа – это прежде всего конкретные люди. За прошедшие 35 лет успел развалиться СССР - и список участников Therion тоже поменялся довольно существенно. Приглашенные вокалисты и бэк-вокалисты менялись как перчатки, не говоря уже про сессионных и тур-музыкантов... Так что одинаковой музыки не ждите в принципе.
От исходного дарк-дэт-метала с элементами прогрессив-дэта музыка Therion довольно быстро мутировал в симфо-метал и даже в «готик-поп», лол. Такие мутации, конечно, всегда выбрасывают часть фандома за борт — всем не угодишь. Однако самые ценные ингредиенты: драма, темная энергия, претензия на усложненный симфонический саунд - никуда не исчезли.
Лично для меня знакомство с группой, случившееся в начало 2000-х,-- совпало с трилогией альбомов Vovin / Crowning Of Atlantis / Deggial (1998 / 1999 / 2000). В те годы я немало погонял эти пластинки, и конечно некий импринтинг имеет место быть - слушая эту музыку сегодня, я возвращаюсь в то время. В таких случаях не всегда можно утверждать объективно - то ли действительно это самая крутанская музыка, или ты ее любишь потому что примешиваются посторонние факторы :)
Сегодня в мой плейлист входит только один трек Териона - опенер с альбома 'Vovin' 1998 года. Он длится 7 минут и никуда не спешит, его не надо слушать "проматывая поскорее к концу". Смакуйте не торопясь. А вообще - весь альбом чудо как замечательный. Невозможно перестать слушать это шедевр! Я довольно часто к нему возвращаюсь.
Так или иначе, спустя декаду после Миллениума объем териона в моей крови превысил допустимую концентрацию, и последующие альбомы:

...не вызвали у меня большого интереса, я пропустил релизы и послушал их сильно задним числом. В какой-то момент времени музыка стала казаться мне повторением пройденного, эксплуатацией найденных ранее удачных ходов и рецептов ("снимаем шпалы с пройденного пути, кладем вперед и едем дальше"). Можно даже назвать ее разбавленной, потерявшей блеск новизны и энергию. (Сколько можно жевать уже пережеванное? оно же давно превратилось в слюни...) Поднявшись на пик, невозможно оставаться там долго - неизбежно последует спуск. А будут ли новые подъемы? гарантии творческого долголетия нет.
Как справедливо утверждает википедия, "основной тематикой текстов группы остается мифология народов мира, мистические и религиозные учения древности. Среди постоянных тем — верования древнего Египта, Скандинавии, Греции, библейская мифология, Атлантида, а также еретические и мистические учения прошлого — алхимия, астрология, магия. Концептуальный альбом 2001 года Secret of the Runes посвящён девяти мирам в скандинавской мифологии... Концертные шоу Therion представляют собой театрализованные представления, которые иллюстрируют содержание песен".
Всё так. Группа не ограничивает себя одной делянкой, но последовательно окучивает много разных - все, способные дать ценный урожай. Но... меня преследует подсознательное подозрение, что все эти метания в разные стороны, копание культурного слоя, попытки "замесить" музыку из ингредиентов то северной мифологии, то Каббалы, то Лемурии - есть не что иное, как творческая импотенция. Тривиальное желание стырить всё что блестит и использовать в своих целях, оплодотворить заёмной и не понятой мистикой свои треки. (А за тысячелетия человеческой истории такого добра скопилось - завались! хватит на тыщу альбомов и ещё останется). Как по мне, это нарушило цельность концепции, во всяком случае -- снижает ее до уровня глупой, несерьёзной игрушки. Мое отношение к группе поменялось именно после осознания этого. (Или может, я просто пресытился?) Правда всегда одна. Ее нельзя менять, выбрасывать и менять на новую - как использованных и загнанных до смерти лошадей. Надеюсь, вы поняли о чем я.
Блог про Therion был бы неполон без пары слов о ранних альбомах (которые часть фэнов считают лучшей частью творческого наследия группы, особенно дебютный альбом). Послушайте любой трек с альбома 'Of Darkness' (1991) - на мой взгляд они все одинаковые, хехе - и вы увидите, что группа прошла большую эволюцию... во всяком случае в плане саунда. Поэтому не стану рекомендовать текущее творчество группы.
И последнее, но не в последнюю очередь: дизайн и упаковка. Грамотно расфасованный товар, адресованный своей целевой аудитории и имеющий хороший маркетинг и рекламный бюджет, творит чудеса! В 1994 Therion подписала контракт с крупным немецким лейблом Nuclear Blast, что резко подняло группу на новый уровень - увеличился бюджет, альбомы стали записываться в лучших студиях Берлина, появились многочисленные сессионные музыканты, оперные певцы, симфонический оркестр на подхвате, и прочие полезные излишества. Оформление альбомов, выпущенных Nuclear Blast, не идет ни в какое сравнение с первыми релизами - смотрится как конфетка! Совершенно другой продукт, высшая лига.
Ну и конечно, сопровождающий свежие релизы видеопродакшен стал намного зрелищней. Хотя музыка уже не такая интересная, посмотреть в эту сторону можно хотя бы ради визуального ряда. Для сравнения, я добавил в пост один из ранних клипов - 'To Mega Therion'. Это конечно низкобюджетный клип... Сравните с видео которые снимаются сегодня. Хотел бы я, чтобы ТОГДА, к тем альбомам они могли снимать видеоклипы такого уровня, как сегодня...
Просвещенный читатель / слушатель наверняка спросит меня: "А что вся это фигня значит?" А НИЧЕГО!!!!! Просто псевдо мистика. Постмодернистская игра с образами. Неотражаемый удар по неокрепшим мозгам (и кошельку) ничего не соображающего эмо готик тинейджера :))))
