A Straight Pass to Heaven 🤍 Un Pase Directo al Cielo

As a singer of a choral group I have been part of many symphonic productions, where the imposing presence of an orchestra conducted by great Venezuelan and international masters stands out. Among so many representative works of various musical periods ranging from the Renaissance to the contemporary I have always had a great affinity with the Requiem, those funeral masses written with liturgical text in Latin but that sounds different depending on the composer, something I love about art, that we can all give a different interpretation even of the same work.

Como cantante de una agrupación coral he sido partícipe de muchos montajes sinfónicos, donde resalta la imponencia de una orquesta dirigida por grandes Maestros venezolanos y de talla internacional. Entre tantas obras representativas de varias épocas musicales que van desde el renacimiento hasta lo contemporáneo siempre he tenido una gran afinidad con los Réquiem, esas misas fúnebres escritas con texto litúrgico en latín pero que suena diferente dependiendo del compositor, algo que amo del arte, que todos podemos dar una interpretación distinta incluso de la misma obra.

I think that the Requiem par excellence is Mozart's, it is very famous and has been replicated and used commercially throughout history, although my favorite will always be Verdi's, it is the most dramatic and makes us very free to sing it, almost like an opera. As I mentioned I have been able to interpret several composers singing as a tenor in different choirs, and today I can conclude that the most sublime of all the Requiems is the one by Gabriel Fauré, just the one we are interpreting at this moment and that will accompany us throughout the month of March in our concert tour.

Creo que el Réquiem por excelencia es el de Mozart, es muy famoso y ha sido replicado y utilizado a nivel comercial a través de la historia, aunque mi favorito siempre será el de Verdi, es el más dramático y nos hace muy libres al cantarlo, casi como una ópera. Como les mencioné he podido interpretar a varios compositores cantando como tenor en distintas corales, y hoy puedo concluir que el más sublime de todos los Réquiem es el de Gabriel Fauré, justo el que estamos interpretando en este momento y que nos acompañará durante todo el mes de Marzo en nuestra gira de conciertos.

In the video that you can see at the beginning of this post you can hear the first bars of this work, this is how our pre-tour concert began last Sunday and it has a very special feature and that is that we will not perform it with a symphony orchestra, we will only be accompanied by a piano. The work is very, very delicate, we must almost always sing it with our best piano because it is ethereal. While other Requiems take you through purgatory or lower you to hell while the Dies Irae plays, Fauré's Requiem feels like dying and having a direct pass to heaven, it is one of the most beautiful compositions I have ever heard.

En el video que pueden apreciar al inicio de este post pueden escuchar los primeros compases de esta obra, así comenzó nuestro concierto pre gira del pasado Domingo y tiene una característica muy especial y es que no lo interpretaremos con una orquesta sinfónica, solo nos acompañará un piano. La obra es muy, muy delicada, casi siempre debemos cantar con nuestro mejor piano ya que es etérea. Mientras otros Réquiem te pasan por el purgatorio o te bajan al infierno mientras suena el Dies Irae, el Réquiem de Fauré lo siento como morir y tener un pase directo al cielo, es una de las composiciones más hermosas que he escuchado.

As you may know, the choir I'm in is not normal 😅 it is integrated by lyric singers, the fact that we are students or graduates makes that among the 91 members we have one of the most powerful choral sounds in Venezuela. For example my girl @jhoxiris has already performed 3 operas, imagine how complicated it is for us to be part of a choir where they ask us for the most sublime sound, and it is not so much because of the vocal technique, but because of the number of people. To accompany an orchestra is perfect, but a single piano, wow, but still we have achieved it. At this moment we are being accompanied by the Spanish pianist Calio Alonso, a very talented young man who has already begun to make himself felt with his discipline at an international level.

Como sabrán, la coral en la que estoy no es normal 😅 está integrada por cantantes líricos, que seamos estudiantes o graduados hace que entre los 91 integrantes tengamos uno de los sonidos corales más potentes en Venezuela. Por ejemplo mi chica @jhoxiris ya ha interpretado 3 óperas, imaginen lo complicado que es para nosotros ser parte de una coral donde nos piden el sonido más sublime, y no es tanto por la técnica vocal, sino por la cantidad de personas. Para acompañar una orquesta es perfecto, pero un solo piano, wow, pero igual lo hemos logrado. En este momento nos está acompañando el pianista español Calio Alonso, un joven muy talentoso que ya ha comenzado a hacerse sentir con su disciplina a nivel internacional.

Maybe it's because I still feel very vulnerable about the subject, but singing this very special funeral mass in this intimate format really hit me. Even though it is in Latin I know exactly what we are saying and the harmony sounds angelic, even the Dies Irae which are usually passages describing the wrath of God. Fauré's Requiem is the exception to the conventional and despite the stories I have told you about my family tragedy, we still feel that the way things turned out was beautiful, my dad made it all happen beautifully and naturally because he was prepared and had a direct pass to heaven. This music must be the sound that is heard when a soul is standing in front of the gates of eternity, a clean soul that deserves to enjoy the glory of God, that's how I feel...

Quizás sea porque todavía me siento muy vulnerable respecto al tema, pero cantar esta misa fúnebre tan especial y en este formato tan íntimo me ha pegado mucho. Aunque es en latín sé perfectamente todo lo que estamos diciendo y la armonía suena angelical, incluso el Dies Irae que suelen ser pasajes que describen la ira de Dios. El Réquiem de Fauré es la excepción a lo convencional y a pesar de las historias que les he contado sobre mi tragedia familiar, aún as´sentimos que la manera en que se dieron las cosas fueron hermosas, mi papá hizo que todo se diera hermoso y natural porque estaba preparado y tenía un pase directo al cielo. Esta música debe ser el sonido que se escucha cuando un alma está parada frente a las puertas de la eternidad, un alma limpia que merece gozar la gloria de Dios, así lo siento yo...

As I have told you in the past, these videos that I share with you to accompany my music posts are recorded by our committee of moms attending the concerts, so they are the property of the entire choir. I know it's not the best example to detail the beauty of the work, and since it was our first time with just the piano, there will be details that we will continue to work on and I hope to be able to share a complete video with you next April. We will sing this beautiful music at least 15 more times this month, especially during Holy Week in important cathedrals around the world ❤️ like La Catedral de Burgos, I am very anxious, but well, one day at a time...

Sé que no es el mejor ejemplo para detallar la belleza de la obra, y a penas fue nuestra primera vez solo con el piano, habrá detalles que seguiremos trabajando y espero poder compartirles un video completo el próximo mes de Abril.
