Walking in Stillwater: October 21 2024

My husband and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary with a trip to the charming river town of Stillwater, Minnesota, on the St. Croix River.

The fall weather has been amazing. In fact the day was heating up as we headed out on a five-mile loop walk.

The designated trail took us over the river on a pedestrian/bike bridge to the neighbor state of Wisconsin, through some farmland, and back over the river on a much larger highway bridge back to Stillwater, MN.

Here’s a picture my husband took of me just as we were heading back into town.

But to backtrack a bit, here are a few pictures of the start of our morning, at a lovely restaurant called Mon Petit Cheri.

We had a very heart breakfast in preparation for our hike!

After that we visited a gift shop on the Main Street in town, called River Bank Gifts, which is carrying my book of short stories, Somewhere in Minnesota.

Of course I had to take a picture of it on the shelf!

Then we were off for our hike. Here’s the entrance to the pedestrian bridge between Minnesota and Wisconsin.

And the Welcome to Wisconsin sign.

Here’s a shot of my husband hiking up a hill among the trees with their fall foliage.

There were signs all along the way providing information about the history of the bridge and the area, as well as the different species of wildlife.

It really didn’t seem like five miles! The scenery was beautiful and it felt great to be out walking after our big breakfast, even with the warm sun making it almost too hot to be comfortable. Fortunately I was carrying a bottle of water.

At last we came to the bridge crossing back over the St. Croix to Minnesota. Here we got a view of the expanse of the river, and of course the pedestrian bridge we had crossed over earlier.

Back to Stillwater!

As we walked back along the river into town, it was fun to see the paddle wheel boats and touring ships that take visitors up and down the river.

The last few pictures are of the charming river cruise ticket office, a trolley concession cart, and a historic restaurant sign. Stillwater is a very old town!

Thanks for visiting!
