STREET ART #111 – A meeting between different characters in an underpass (Elsinore, Denmark)

DSC_01.JPG

This time again, I want to post more «tunnel» art from one of the underpasses in Elsinore in Denmark. In the outskirts of the city we came across several underpasses that are beautifully decorated. I don't know if there were more, but these were close together, so we got a great opportunity to discover a lot of beautiful art. I have already done several posts from Elisinore from these underpasses.

This tunnel was painted in 2020 by Danish contemporary artist Mia-Nelle Drøschler. The title on this piece is « "Nu skal Holger Danske Vågne" which directly translated means «Now Holger Danske shall wake up». The two walls shows also Hamlet and Kronborg Castle. «Holger Danske» is a national hero of Denmark – Holger the Dane.

Acording to the legend, Holger the Dane will wake up if Denmark is attacked. Underneath Kronborg Castle there is a statue of this hero, sleeping with his sword. Drøschler has painted him with his eyes open because she thinks it's time for him and all the heroes to wake up and come to help. Our world has changed and we need to stand together if we are going to cope the world's rapid transformation. In her opinion, Holger Danske can bring people together.

Hamlet and his home, Kronborg Castle is painted on the opposite wall. There are mermaids in the sea around the castle. This castle is perhaps the most famous castle in Denmark because of William Shakespeares play «Hamlet». Shakespeare made Kronborg Castle the home of Hamlet (Prince of Denmark)

Drøschler grew up in this area and has being portraing legends and scenes for Elsinore. She has also been portraing local people. Notice the small portraits in black and white. These must be some of the locals.
