STREET ART #107 – Dr. Sun Yat Sen street in Port Louis (Mauritius)

DSC_01.jpg

As you might have seen from my previous posts from Mauritius, there has been an amazing developement on the island, especially in the capital of Port Louis. Each year I see how it developes. I have already done a post about street art in Chinatown, so this is just a continuation. A few weeks ago it was from the small alley, Venpin street, which has close to 40 paintings, if I count all of them. Venpin streets runs between two streets of Chinatown. One of them is Dr.Sun Yat Sen street. When I continued to walk up this street I noticed that the street has doubled the amount of paintings, since last time I was here (2019).

The artist who painted all the portraits of Sun Yat Sen is Chinese Chi Baolu (Seven Chi), a young international artist, educated in China.

Dr.Sun Yat Sen is pictured together with the street name. His portrait is also seen on several murals in Chinatown. He was a politian and a revolutionary. He was also the first provisional president in 1912 when the Republic of China was founded. Chinatown in Port Louis is small, but it's definitly the part of town with most murals.

The signature of The New Chinatown Foundation is everywhere and on almost every wall in this street. The artist behind the panda is Wazeer. When I checked on Instagram it seems he might be a pastry chef. :

A colorful bazaar painted by @anoushachaos. Unfortunatly a car was parked in the front, so I didn't get a good angle for the photo. She is a contemporary artist from Mauritius. Chek here for more of her works: https://www.instagram.com/anoushachaos/

The intiative to renew Chinatown was startet by a group of young people as a non-profit organization which is called The New Chinatown Foundation. Thanks to these people Chinatown has become a much more attractive part of town Chinatown was the center of commerce when the Chinese immigrants came to the island. But it has suffered from neglect for a long time. This group of young people wanted to change that. Many talented artists were invited to Mauritius where they worked together with locals artists. This part of the city is definitly the one with the largest amount of street art.

Next to the butterfly you will see this beautiful mural showcasing life in a tropical ocean. I like the shark with an open mouth well placed on the corner of the building. A talented artist. For more of her works check:

There are more murals in this street. Most of them were done in 2018. You can see some of them in a previous post from 2019:
