Trip to Gemer

Old church in Plešivec

It's summer and my friend and I were thinking about where to go on a trip with our families. We decided to go to Gemer. As far as historical monuments are concerned, this is not exactly the most visited area in Slovakia. Which is a shame, because here we can find interesting historical monuments. However, there are important caves, which are the main tourist attraction.

We decided to visit one. It's Baradla Cave, Aggtelek. This cave is located in neighboring Hungary, near the state border. Its cave complex also extends into Slovakia. It is inscribed on the UNESCO list.

We cross the state border and park for a while in the parking lot before entering the cave. We're buying tickets and we're going down. From the first steps, I feel like we are entering an amazing environment that has been created by nature for hundreds of years. The drip decoration in this cave is truly majestic. Judge for yourself.

I take photos without a tripod. Fortunately, the guide is in no hurry, so I can take pictures of the details in peace.

We end the tour of the cave and return to Slovakia. We are going to see the village Plešivec.

In the village are the ruins of the castle Plešivec. To this day, only one wall has been preserved. Sometimes, however, a water castle stood on this site.

In the village Plešivec there is also an old Gothic church with a tower. It was built in the first half of the 14th century as a family church of the lords of Gemer - the Bebek family. We're not going inside, but at least I took a picture of him outside.

Another water castle on Gemery is a water castle Štítnik. Several buildings and bastions have been preserved from this castle. It is a large castle which was surrounded by swamps. The castle was built by the Bebek family in the first half of the 15th century. He was conquered during the Turkish invasion. When the Turks withdrew, the castle again became the seat of the nobles.

At present, the castle is inhabited by this horse.

The jewel of the village Štítnik is the Evangelical Gothic church. The basilica was originally built in the 14th century.

We enter the bottom and admire the beautifully preserved frescoes on the walls. The church has the oldest organ in Slovakia from 1492.

Satisfied and happy, full of experiences, we return home. Well thank you.
