What is smelly feet?


Ever had an experience where your feet, shoes or socks smell in a weird kind of way? If yes, well let's say you have had smelly feet. Now this is no big deal because it is commonly experienced by all humans especially if you wear shoes or anything on your feet.
Smelly feet is biologically known as Biomodosis. Biomodosis or smelly feet occurs when there is an accumulation or build up of sweat which results in bacteria growth on the skin, shoes or socks.
Now this bacteria feeds on dead skin and oils and multiply. This in turn causes bad odors and explains why the feet smells in a really weird kind of way!
Sometimes, however smelly feet occurs alone but certain foot conditions such as
Athlete's Foot can also cause smelly feet too.

Why does my feet smells weird


As stated earlier, smelly feet is usually caused as a result of sweat buildups which provides a breeding ground for bacteria to act.
Wearing plastic shoes or even wearing shoes without socks or with socks which provide little or no air ventilation for your feets can cause smelly feet. Also wearing wet socks or shoes can contribute to smelly feet and shoes.

How can I prevent my feet and shoes from smelling?


Here are some practical steps to prevent smelly feet;

  1. Maintaining good hygiene : Sometimes we forget that we have feet and that they do need proper care and attention. The first step to getting a healthy looking and smelling feet is that you must take your personal hygiene seriously. Wash your feet everyday with clean water and mild soaps. Medicated soaps can also be very helpful to kill bacteria.
    Also keep your shoes Clean by washing them after repeated use and sun-drying them properly. Always pay attention to your insoles. Wash them clean and properly sundry them

  2. Wear the right socks: Always ensure your socks allows for proper air ventilation. Wear cotton, wool or knitted socks which allows your feet breathe

  3. Make sure your shoes are not too tight: Wearing too tight shoes creates sweat which provides room for bacteria growth. Also avoid plastic shoes as they do not allow your feet breathe and can create room for bacteria growth.

  4. Avoid repeating the same shoes for too long: It is important to not repeat the same shoes consecutively as this creates room for sweat buildups which in turn becomes a breeding ground for bacteria growth. Hence, switch up your shoes to avoid smelly shoes and feet.

Conclusion

It is good for our feet's well being that we pay adequate attention to changes such as bad odors and that we take proper care of our feet, shoes and socks. Secondly, it is also good to pay attention to our feet in order to know when something is not right with our feet and when to seek proper medical care and attention. Finally, maintain good hygiene practices and try not to repeat the same socks twice!
