DISTANCE

There was a particular day Felix followed his mum to Stepfather's neighboring village, Felix knew there was a long distance between this home and him.

To avoid interrupting his studies, his stepfather placed him in the room with the good states, but he went to live in the damp west room with Mom. Felix particularly purchased a lamp from the market and he placed it on his table. Every night, stepfather often brought that new book he procured from a nearby bookshop, sat in opposite Felix, and studied with him. Stepfather only silently sat, never attempting to make any sound, but he always turn a page once in a while.

In a few weeks Felix would have to take the senior high entrance exam for his admission process, so every night he had to study very well until very late, yet it doesn't matter how late was, Stepfather would always accompany him, right until he turned off the light for him. Felix knew that Stepfather had been very tired of being outside the whole day doing some strenuous works, plus Felix was also not used to him sitting opposite from me every night, so he told his mother that she should to his stepfather to never come into his room again at night. His mum's lips moved a little, yet she did not speak, and her eyes were also very moist.

That night, he heard Stepfather telling his mum that his studies are toilsome. If there is anyone to keep him company, he will be a little more energetic. Felix heard overheard this, he stopped rejecting him, and from that particular day on, his Stepfather put another table in his bedroom where the distance happened to be the opposite of where the lamp could still illuminate the place. Every single night, his stepfather still read with him, the only difference is that he became more silent, and the sound of his pages turning was smaller. When the sound of the pages turning was at times loud, he would constantly nervously look up to examine me, and seeing that he did not mind, would continue to read with ease. In this way, up until before Felix's senior high entrance exam, stepfather had turned through different very thick books with me.

On the day of the senior high entrance exam, stepfather insisted on giving him a bike ride to the exam venue. As he confidently sat in the rear of his stepfather's bike, looking at him with his sweaty back, he felt that the distance with him became somehow closer.

On the wonderful day of receiving the acceptance notice from the school, he was playing in the river by the town with friends. As he ran home very fast, Stepfather was saying something important to the mailman. The mailman told stepfather to sign his name on the acceptance notice and help him fill in some vital details. He took the pen, weirdly looked at Felix, then looked at the mailman, and he uncomfortably said that he can not read, and don't know how to sign his name. Then he could not hold the joy in his heart and glanced at the villagers around him.

At that point, Felix's mind became blank. "What! He can not read? Then..." At this point, a feeling of appreciation flowed at his heart. With tears all over his face, he kneeled in front of Stepfather, unintentionally cried out, "Dad---" He still only put on a soft smile, yet he held unlimited satisfaction.

As Felix sized up this home again, he felt that there was already no distance between him and his Stepfather.
