I'm not much of a fan of teen drama, but I've read short references about this Netflix series and it really caught my attention. Although it didn't get the reproductions it was expected, let's say it offers a fresh and different story.
We will be able to find a process of overcoming, of meeting our deepest fears and traumas, to then turn them into courage, that substance that allows us to talk about death without fear.
There is not only drama, but also mystery and terror, which is condensed from top to bottom without revealing too much, only appearing when it is convenient. There are a lot of good elements embedded, but in the long run they are being undervalued because of the series' lack of popularity.

No soy muy fanático del drama juvenil, pero he leído cortas referencias sobre esta serie de Netflix y me llamó mucho la atención. Aunque no tuvo las reproducciones que se esperaba, digamos que ofrece una historia fresca y diferente.
Podremos encontrar un proceso de superación, de encontrarnos con nuestros más profundos miedos y traumas, para luego convertirlos en valor, esa sustancia que nos permita hablar de muerte sin miedo.
No solo hay drama, sino también misterio y terror, que se va condensando de arriba hacia abajo sin revelar demasiado, solo apareciendo cuando le conviene. Hay muchos elementos buenos enfrascados, pero a la larga están siendo infravalorados por la poca popularidad de la serie.
Technical Data
The director and creator of the series is already someone well known in the horror genre, it is Mike Flanagan, already well known for The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and the excellent, but underrated miniseries Midnight Mass. I believe they are all on Netflix and each is perfect according to its particularity.
Based on the novel by Christopher Pike, Flanagan, along with Leah Fong, created the screenplay. The music was done by The Newton Brothers, and the photography and effects by James Kniest, Michael Fimognari and Corey Robson, who offer us those contrasting colors in shadows and brightness.
The main protagonist is Iman Benson, along with Ruth Codd, Igby Rigney, Sauriyan Sapkota, Aya Furukawa, among others. The series was released this October 7 on Netflix, with an extension of 10 chapters and was produced by Intrepid Pictures.

El director y creador de la serie ya es alguien muy conocido en el género del terror, se trata de Mike Flanagan, ya muy conocido por The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor y la excelentísima, pero infravalorada miniserie Midnight Mass. Creo que todas se encuentran en Netflix y cada una es perfecta de acuerdo a su particularidad.
Basándose en la novela de Christopher Pike, Flanagan, junto a Leah Fong, crearon el guion. La música fue hecha por The Newton Brothers, y la fotografía y efectos por James Kniest, Michael Fimognari y Corey Robson, quienes nos ofrecen esos colores contrastantes en sombras y brillantes.
Como protagonista principal tenemos a Iman Benson, junto a Ruth Codd, Igby Rigney, Sauriyan Sapkota, Aya Furukawa, entre otros. La serie fue estrenada este 7 de octubre en Netflix, con una extensión de 10 capítulos y fue producida por la Intrepid Pictures.
Plot and opinion
Like any series aimed at a young audience, the main characters belong to this category. Ilonka is an 18 year old girl with dreams and goals to accomplish, but long before packing her bags for college, she is diagnosed with thyroid cancer which over time becomes progressive turning into a terminal disease.
Ilonka clings to the hope of survival and searches the web for something to help her, until she finds the miraculous story of a girl named Julia Jaynes, who had the same type of cancer as Ilonka and was mysteriously cured. The girl was staying at a hospice called Rotterdam Home, for terminally ill young adults.
Clinging to hope thanks to this story, Ilonka manages to stay at the hospice, where she meets Dr. Georgina, the owner of the place, along with a number of other kids with different types of terminal illnesses, and one more with HIV, as the series is adapted in 1994; by this time antiretroviral drugs were not as potent.
Ilonka discovers that every midnight, the hospice kids gather in the hospice library to tell scary stories, a plot that reminded me a lot of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, a 90s series that was very popular, and that also had a group of teenagers gathering around a campfire to tell horror stories.
As a kid I was a fan of scary stories, and this 90s series was my first approach to the genre. I didn't watch all the seasons, but I watched enough to keep those wonderful stories in my memory.
In The Midnight Club, we will find more visceral stories, as we will be watching a group of young people with little time to live talking about death. Each story they tell allows us to see a little more about their dreams, their fears, their hopes and the people they wanted to be.
This enigmatic club has a particularity; a pact in which, if one of them dies first, he must do everything possible to communicate with his companions from beyond the grave. All this pushes us into an atmosphere full of mystery and fear, where the representation of a terrifying and supernatural figure walks through the corridors of the mansion.
Flanagan again immerses us in the inhospitable and frightening atmosphere of haunted houses, as he did in The Haunting of Hill House and in the oceanfront isolation of Midnight Mass, elements that I was recognizing as I watched the episodes.
I find the story to be very emotional, to the point where you can sympathize with the situation of each of the main characters. Each one has his or her own particular story, personality, feelings and expressiveness. Most of them have lost hope, with the exception of Ilonka, who is the only one who retains it and manages to transmit it to her other companions.
Although this is the main character of the series, and is the one who seeks the way to solve the enigma that surrounds that place, let's say that I did not manage to sympathize much with her. I think the actress is very good, with very convincing expressions, but the problem was her character.
Actually, I always do the same thing. I never manage to connect with unreal characters, who believe in things like homeopathy or any pseudo-scientific bullshit. That character with beliefs about magic and miracles seems to me as absurd as his attitude, but as the series progresses, you can see a certain evolution; a break of hope.
The series seems like it also wanted to show us that process, of how hope is diluted until it becomes just a piece that can turn to dust at any moment. However, as faith decays, at the same time the friendship between the boys strengthens, and that is one of the most touching parts.
As a horror series, it doesn't really work very well for this genre. Here you're not going to feel terrified or scared, despite its excesses of jump scares, but you will be moved by every story you see.
As for the stories that the kids told in the club, I liked some of them and I really enjoyed watching them, for me it's the best part of the series, plus through them I could get to know the characters a little more; about their dreams and the life they would have liked to have if it wasn't for the terminal illnesses they carry.
Basically everything is emotionally charged, and lots and lots of youth drama seen from a rawer perspective. However, it leaves a lot of questions up in the air and mysteries left unresolved, with an open ending that made me wonder many more things.
I read an article that it is very possible that Netflix will cancel the series for not being as successful as expected, which leaves me in terrible suspense, as I need the second season to answer all my doubts. Although Flanagan himself, on his Twitter account, said that, if the series is cancelled, he would clear the doubts over there, but I don't know, it wouldn't be the same.
I need to see those guys again, staying in that isolated place with particular and ancient architecture, to listen to their scary stories at midnight in front of a lit fireplace, let's hope everything goes well.
Trama y opinión
Como toda serie dirigida a un público joven, los protagonistas pertenecen a esta categoría. Ilonka es una chica de 18 años con sueños y metas por cumplir, pero mucho antes de hacer sus maletas para la universidad, es diagnosticada con cáncer de tiroides que con el tiempo se vuelve progresivo convirtiéndose en una enfermedad terminal.
Ilonka se aferra a la esperanza de sobrevivir y busca por la red algo que la ayude, hasta que encuentra la historia milagrosa de una chica llamada Julia Jaynes, quien poseía el mismo tipo de cáncer que Ilonka y se curó misteriosamente. La chica estaba hospedada en un hospicio llamado Rotterdam Home, para jóvenes adultos con enfermedades terminales.
Aferrada a la esperanza gracias a esta historia, Ilonka consigue hospedarse en el hospicio, allí conoce a la Dra. Georgina, propietaria del lugar, junto a otra serie de chicos con diferentes tipos de enfermedades terminales, y uno más con VIH, ya que la serie está adaptada en 1994; para esta época los medicamentos antirretrovirales no eran tan potentes.
Ilonka descubre que cada medianoche, los chicos del hospicio se reúnen en la biblioteca del lugar para contar historias de miedo, una trama que me hizo recordar mucho a Are You Afraid of the Dark?, una serie de los 90s que fue muy popular, y que también tenía a un grupo de adolescentes que se reunían alrededor de una hoguera a contar historias de terror.
De niño fui fan de las historias de miedo, y esta serie de los 90s fue mi primer acercamiento al género. No vi todas las temporadas, pero si las suficientes para mantener esa maravilla de historias en mi memoria.
En The Midnight Club, encontraremos historias más viscerales, pues estaremos observando a un grupo de jóvenes con poco tiempo de vida hablando sobre la muerte. Cada historia que cuentan nos permite ver un poco más sobre sus sueños, sus miedos, sus esperanzas y las personas que querían ser.
Este enigmático club tiene una particularidad; un pacto en el cual, si uno de ellos muere primero, deberá hacer todo lo posible por comunicarse con sus compañeros desde el más allá. Todo esto nos empuja a una atmosfera llena de misterio y miedo, donde la representación de una figura terrorífica y sobrenatural se pasea por los pasillos de la mansión.
Flanagan de nuevo nos sumerge en el inhóspito y temible ambiente de casas encantadas, tal y como lo hizo en The Haunting of Hill House y en el aislamiento frente al mar de Midnight Mass, elementos que iba reconociendo a medida que veía los episodios.
Me parece que la historia es muy emocional, hasta el punto en que logras compadecer la situación de cada uno de los personajes principales. Cada uno tiene su historia particular, su personalidad, sentimientos y expresividades. La mayoría de ellos ha perdido la esperanza, con excepción de Ilonka, quien es la única que la conserva y logra transmitírsela a sus demás compañeros.
Aunque este es el personaje principal de la serie, y es el que busca la manera de resolver el enigma que envuelve aquel lugar, digamos que no logré simpatizar mucho con ella. La actriz me parece muy buena, con expresiones muy convincentes, pero el problema fue su personaje.
En realidad, siempre hago lo mismo. Nunca logro conectarme con personajes irreales, que creen en cosas como la homeopatía o cualquier estupidez pseudocientífica. Ese personaje con creencias sobre la magia y los milagros me parece tan absurdo como su actitud, pero a medida que la serie va a avanzando, se puede ver una cierta evolución; un quiebre de la esperanza.
La serie parece que también deseaba mostrarnos ese proceso, de cómo la esperanza se diluye hasta convertirse en solo un trozo que puede convertirse en polvo en cualquier momento. Sin embargo, a medida que la fe decae, al mismo tiempo se va reforzando la amistad entre los chicos, y esa es una de las partes más conmovedoras.
Como serie de terror, en realidad no funciona muy bien para este género. Aquí no te vas a sentir aterrado o con miedo, a pesar de sus excesos de jump scares, pero si te sentirás conmovido con cada historia que verás.
En cuanto a los cuentos que los chicos contaban en el club, me gustaron algunos y de verdad disfruté bastante viéndolos, para mí es la mejor parte de la serie, además que a través de ellos podía conocer un poco más a los personajes; sobre sus sueños y la vida que les hubiera gustado tener si no fuera por las enfermedades terminales que cargan.
Básicamente todo está cargado de emotividad, y mucho, pero mucho drama juvenil visto desde una perspectiva más cruda. Sin embargo, deja muchas preguntas en el aire y misterios que no se han resuelto, con un final abierto que me hizo preguntarme muchas más cosas.
Leí un artículo de que es muy posible que Netflix cancele la serie por no haber tenido el éxito que esperaba, lo cual me deja en un suspenso terrible, ya que necesito la segunda temporada para responder todas mis dudas. Aunque el propio Flanagan, en su cuenta de Twitter, dijo que, si la serie es cancelada, aclararía las dudas por allí, pero no sé, no sería lo mismo.
Necesito volver a ver a aquellos chicos, hospedados en aquel lugar aislado con arquitectura particular y antigua, para escuchar sus historias de miedo a medianoche frente a una chimenea encendida, esperemos que todo salga bien.
Conclusions
As a horror genre, I think it falters a lot, but I also think that this is just one element that complements the touching story of the plot. Here you'll find romance, drama, mystery, some suspense and a brotherly friendship, the kind you rarely get in the world, that will most likely bring a few tears to your eyes.
At times it is predictable, at others not so much. You have to look closely at the details that the narrative arc leaves in plain sight. I always pay attention to the particularity of the photography in a scene and here it is achieved very well, as we have a contrast of dark and light; shadows that know where to fit perfectly in each place, without overshadowing other elements.
In addition, it is set in a house with archaic architecture, one of those that intrigue and amaze you. They have always been my favorite settings in horror environments, and they always look perfect as dark environments with a melancholy situation.
Although I didn't connect much with the characters (only one in particular), I liked the bond of friendship and the scary stories they told. It took me back in time with one of my favorite series from the 90s. I hope you'll take the time to watch it and give it a rating.
Conclusiones
Como género de terror, pienso que flaquea mucho, pero también creo que esto es solo un elemento que complementa la conmovedora historia de la trama. Aquí encontrarás romance, drama, misterio, algo de suspenso y una amistad fraternal, de esas que casi no se consiguen en el mundo, y que lo más probable te haga expulsar algunas lágrimas.
En algunas ocasiones es predecible, en otras no tanto. Hay que mirar bien los detalles que el arco narrativo deja a simple vista. Siempre me fijo en la particularidad de la fotografía en una escena y aquí se logra muy bien, pues tenemos un contraste de oscuridad y luz; sombras que saben dónde ajustarse perfectamente en cada lugar, sin opacar otros elementos.
Además, está ambientada en una casa con arquitectura arcaica, de esas que te intrigan y causan estupor. Siempre han sido mis escenarios favoritos en ambientes de terror, y siempre quedan perfectas como ambientes oscuros con una situación de melancolía.
Aunque con los personajes no conecté mucho (solo con uno en particular), me gustó el vínculo de amistad y las historias de miedo que contaban. Me hizo regresar al pasado con una de mis series favoritas de los 90s. Espero que te animes a verla y le des una valoración.
