This Canadian film from the year 2020, tells us a story in which the protagonist is a girl who decides to search through one of these websites, dates with older men in order to have money to help her improve her career and get out of debt.
The film goes beyond exploring that world and is not just an anecdote about a girl and her Sugar Daddys. It's a more intimate story about a girl who wants to fulfill her dream in the competitive world of music, but financial problems are a big obstacle to getting there.

What is the plot of Sugar Daddy?
Darren is a young man who decides to leave his mother's home in a small town to move to the big city, where he can study and pursue a career as a musician and singer. He seems to have talent, but life in the city is expensive. He has to pay for sharing an apartment with another boy, plus the costs of musical instruments and equipment are high. She goes through different jobs until she gets fired from a catering service for stealing food. She discovers that a former co-worker is making money escorting older men to events and dinners. Darren opens a profile on a website to find Sugar Daddys. He starts dating older men involved in the music business. He accompanies them to dinners, parties or outings. Finally he will have money to fulfill his goal, to become a singer. What is that world like? Is it really prostitution? What kind of relationship will he have with his clients? Will he improve as a musician? Does he really have talent for music? Will Darren find success as a singer?

My opinion about the movie
The film is the story of a young girl, like many today, with great aspirations to excel in an artistic field, this time it is the world of music.
Darren is a girl of strong character, she is not naive. She is young, but she is prepared for a difficult life. She wants to be independent, that's why she ventures into a big city and doesn't want to answer her mother's calls.
She is a free spirit that economic circumstances will push her to try the dating service with older men to earn income to help her improve as a musician, by being able to acquire instruments and equipment to experiment with musical styles.
We are spectators of her musical growth, her inner conflicts and insecurities that prevent her from exploiting her full potential.
The whole Sugar Daddy thing is a contextual element for what is really important, which is Darren's musical development.

El film es la historia de una joven, como muchas de la actualidad, con grandes aspiraciones dentro de un campo artístico, en esta ocasión es el mundo de la música.
Darren es una chica de carácter fuerte, no es una mujer ingenua. Ella es joven, pero esta preparada para una vida difícil. Quiere ser independiente, por eso se aventura en una ciudad grande y no quiere responder las llamadas de su madre.
Ella es un espíritu libre que las circunstancias económicas la empujaran a probar el servicio de citas con hombres mayores para obtener ingresos económicos que la ayuden a mejorar como cantante, al poder adquirir instrumentos y equipos para experimentar con estilos musicales.
Somos espectadores de su crecimiento musical, de sus conflictos internos e inseguridades que le impiden explotar todo su potencial.
El asunto de los Sugar Daddy es un elemento que funciona de contexto para lo verdaderamente importante, que es el desarrollo personal y musical de Darren.
As I watched the film, I asked myself the following questions: Is he really talented? Can he be successful? Is he really good as a singer? Why do a few succeed and many don't? The movie made me reflect on this question. We can be good at a certain artistic facet, but never achieve the greatest success. How much luck is there in the artistic world?
Another thought-provoking issue, which is captured in one of the sequences of the film, is how society can act as judge and executioner, even your own circle of friends, on the issue of going out to dinner with someone older in exchange for money. It's just dinner, there is no sexual exchange, but for many people it can amount to prostitution. There will always be people who think they are morally superior to others, when they should let everyone live as they want and respect the choices they make.
The film does not judge what the protagonist does. The camera only acts as our eyes, observing the facts, without inducing the viewer to anything. Each one must draw his own conclusion. This is something I liked about the narrative.
Mientras veía el film, me hice las siguientes preguntas: ¿En realidad ella tiene talento? ¿Puede ser exitosa? ¿De verdad es buena como cantante? ¿Por qué unos pocos tienen éxito y muchos otro no? El film me hizo reflexionar sobre este tema. Podemos ser buenos en determinada faceta artística, pero nunca alcanzar el mayor de los éxitos. ¿Cuánto de suerte hay en el mundo artístico?
Otro de los temas que nos hace reflexionar y es plasmado en una de las secuencias de la película, es como puede actuar la sociedad como juez y verdugo, incluso tu propio círculo de amistades, sobre el asunto de salir a cenar con alguien mayor a cambio de dinero. Solo es una cena, no hay intercambio sexual, pero mucha gente puede igualarlo a la prostitución. Siempre existirán personas que creen ser moralmente superiores a otros, cuando deberían dejar que cada quien viva como quiera y respetar las decisiones que toma.
La película no juzga lo que hace el personaje principal. La cámara observa los hechos, sin inducir al espectador a nada. Cada uno de nosotros debe sacar su propia conclusión. Esto es algo que me agrado mucho de la narración.
It is an independent film with a narrative that caught me as soon as I started watching it and I loved that in several scenes they play with experimental cinema. Specifically with the process of Darren's empowerment as an integral musical artist. Trying with sounds, images and compositions, endowing the film with beautiful scenes full of symbolism.
Another independent production that I recommend. An authentic cinematic proposal, with personality. The kind of films that exert an attraction in me, where any negative detail, it is not important to name it, because everything else is superior. You already know me and you know very well that I am fascinated by independent cinema.
I loved the film. It left me reflecting on several topics and I enjoyed the main character, his gestures, his deep look, his close-ups and reactions to every situation he has to live. It is a contemporary story that gives us a pleasant sensory experience.
Es un film independiente con una narración que me atrapo y me encanto que en varias escenas juegan con el cine experimental. Específicamente con el proceso de fortalecimiento de Darren como una artista musical integral. Probando con los sonidos, imágenes y composiciones, dotando al film de unas hermosas escenas llenas de simbolismo.
Otra producción independiente que recomiendo. Una propuesta cinematográfica autentica, con personalidad. El tipo de películas que ejercen una atracción en mi, donde cualquie detalle negativo, no tiene importancia nombrarla. Ya ustedes me conocen y saben lo mucho que me fascinan las películas independientes.
Me encanto y me dejo reflexionando sobre varios temas, disfrute del personaje protagonista, sus gestos, su profunda mirada, sus primeros planos y reacciones ante cada situación que le toca vivir. Es una historia actual que nos regala una agradable experiencia sensorial.

The screenplay is written by Kelly McCormack. She is a Canadian filmmaker with experience in directing, writing, producing and acting. She is also a producer of Sugar Daddy, through her own company Floyder Films. Some may recognize her from the sci-fi series Killjoys. She is a professional who has made appearances in several Canadian television series and has written independent films.
We will soon see her as an actress in the series A League of Their Own, which is currently in post-production and is inspired by the famous 90's movie about a women's baseball league.
McCormack plays Darren, the young woman who after being out of work and going through a period of personal conflict for not progressing as an artist, decides to open a profile on the dating website and get money in exchange for accompanying older men to parties, dinners and perhaps, get to a more intimate exchange. I liked her interpretation, she is a somewhat complex character and her decisions can be difficult to understand. I thought the actress' work was excellent. The Director
It is directed by another female filmmaker, Wendy Morgan, who has a background in music videos and TV series. Both she and Kelly do a great job, because the film approaches the story from a female point of view and although McCormack is an activist in the MeToo movement, they don't have hate speech towards men, nor do the male characters seem like monsters. Proving that it is possible to make films about current women's issues, but without making all the male characters dehumanizing. Es dirigido por otra cineasta Wendy Morgan, quien tiene experiencia en vídeos musicales y series de televisión. Tanto ella como Kelly hacen un gran trabajo, porque la película enfoca la historia desde el punto de vista femenino y aunque McCormack es activista del movimiento MeToo, no tienen un discurso de odio hacia el hombre, los personajes masculinos no parecen monstruos. Demostrando se puede hacer cine sobre problemas actuales de las mujeres, pero sin dibujar los personajes masculinos deshumanizados. I recommend you to watch this little independent gem made in Canada. A story of overcoming, of constant struggle for dreams, with a protagonist who must fight against her own insecurities and make decisions that help her to fulfill the goals she has in her life, no matter what others say or that she is judged by a society full of hypocrisy.
I hope you enjoy this excellent film.
Te recomiendo ver esta pequeña joya independiente hecha en Canadá. Una historia de superación personal, de la constante lucha por los sueños, con una protagonista que debe luchar contra sus propias inseguridades y tomar decisiones que la ayuden a cumplir los objetivos que tiene en su vida, sin importar lo que digan los demás o que sea juzgada por una sociedad repleta de hipocresía.
