I never expected it to provide one of the most intense and enjoyable crime stories of recent times. The story is about the Byrde family, which appears to be just your regular American family, but they are nothing like that because the 2 parents are actually professional money launderers.
They work for an extremely powerful and rich cartel that moves an enormous quantity of money, and it is up to Marty and Wendy Byrde, husband and wife, to figure out ways that could allow them to clean millions and millions of drug money.
Marty is an extremely talented and skilled man, and his ability to find solutions to complex problems is absolutely remarkable. They have to deal not only with the law and its many detectives that are constantly smelling something fishy about them. But not only that, they also have to constantly deal with problematic people that live in the same small town as them.
Because you see, the series begins with the family moving to a very remote town deep in the mountains, hence the name of the show, and while in there, they slowly begin to take over the place by making investments that make it possible for them to launder all the money they need.
This town isn't entirely healthy, not even close. Before they arrived, there were already a lot of criminals in there, and there was some type of established status quo but the Byrde family will disrupt pretty much everything.
They will have to kill people if necessary or work together with some of the local people if this is the better choice. They are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed at their job. Their lives depend on this because if they fail, the cartel will most likely kill them.

There will be many killings and even betrayals along the way, and this is just how things are when it comes to drug money. Every person needs to care for him or herself, and everyone involved have to constantly be looking over the shoulder just in case.
Something that is constantly causing them a lot of trouble is the unreasonable attitude of the cartel's boss. He can act in a very reckless way that usually makes things harder for the Byrde family because they have to deal with more problems as the result of this recklessness.
There will be many situations where their life is about to be ended but so far they have managed to survive this sinister world of crime. However, I had serious doubts about the survival of some main characters in these final episodes. I was expecting some dramatic and sad deaths to occur simply because it made all the sense in the world. There was enough chaos and disorder that more killings were the most likely outcome in my view.
The Byrdes have to be not only super quick-witted to avoid failing at their tasks, but the emotional endurance they must have to not break down under so much pressure is gigantic. Any normal person would be unable to overcome the challenges this marriage is forced to face due to the type of job they decided to have.
It is also made very clear that having this type of job has disincentivized them to actions that could be considered emotionally painful to normal people such as lying, betraying, and even planning the murder of other people.
If you wonder why they do this, well, it is a nice paying job, they are getting rich by laundering this money, and if everything ends up good for them they could retire in the short term. That's their plan at least, the problem is that when you start working with important criminal groups, convincing them to let you go isn't easy.

También se deja muy claro que tener este tipo de trabajo los ha desincentivado a acciones que podrían considerarse emocionalmente dolorosas para las personas normales como mentir, traicionar e incluso planear el asesinato de otras personas.
Si te preguntas por qué hacen esto, bueno, es un trabajo bien remunerado, se están enriqueciendo lavando este dinero, y si todo termina bien para ellos podrían jubilarse a corto plazo. Ese es su plan al menos, el problema es que cuando comienzas a trabajar con grupos criminales importantes, convencerlos de que te dejen ir no es fácil.
This season introduced a lot of dysfunctionalities in the Byrde family, which was only a matter of time in my opinion. A family that pretends to be normal cannot keep its sanity if they are constantly put under pressure by murderous drug dealers with money to do anything they want.
The main dysfunctionality introduced in the episodes released back in January was related to their son, Jonah. He has gotten older and is no longer the little kid he was back when the series started. There was a bit of discrepancy because the actor is now clearly older than his character, and his new level of rebellion towards his parents fits his real age and not his character's age. This is the issue when working with kid actors that they can get older faster than the series or film can advance, and these discrepancies are then unavoidable.
This is a peculiar series because unlike most productions, the main characters cannot be considered good people, there aren't heroes and villains in Ozark, only soulless villains who are just looking for money and power and are willing to devour anyone who gets in their way.
Final thoughts
Ozark is among the best Netflix series of all time. It is also among the best crime series I have seen in my life. I would say it is on the same level as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The series also made it possible for me to discover the actress Julia Garner, which was a total revelation and became one of my favorite cast members of the show. The way she played her character, Ruth Langmore, was total perfection.
I am a bit sad knowing this series has reached its end, but I am also happy because at no time did I feel Ozark was being overmilked. The series lasted what it had to last and nothing more. It kept the same level of quality in both the writing and the performance from beginning to end, and it always managed to provide new situations full of tension that I particularly found super enjoyable.
Ozark is a must-watch series, after many years I haven't found a person who has watched it without enjoying it. That's how good it is.
Esta temporada introdujo muchas disfunciones en la familia Byrde, lo que era solo cuestión de tiempo en mi opinión. Una familia que finge ser normal no puede mantener su cordura si son constantemente presionados por traficantes de drogas y asesinos con dinero para hacer lo que quieran.
