This series belongs to the scifi and mystery genres but it might seem boring at a first glance because the story is about the corporate life of people who apparently have regular jobs with nothing special going on. Even many of the characters acted as if there was nothing unusual going on in their lives, at least in the beginning.
It turns out the truth couldn't be further from that. The soulless-looking corporation these people are working for isn't a regular corporation, and the lives these people are living, might look normal but they aren't. Far from it.
The series begins with a first scene that makes it clear something strange is going on, something that cannot be explained by conventional science or technology. Something, creepy, scary, and maybe even sinister.
I recommend paying attention to the face of the main character when he is about to leave the elevator and you might notice something slightly off about what happened there. This is when I started to create my own theories about what could be happening in this place.
Some of the first things I noticed during the first office meeting with the boss is that she has a super weird personality, is very android-like, and with zero naturality and spontaneity. Maybe this soulless corporation ate away her humanity or maybe she is something different? I had this doubt as soon as that meeting from the first episode was over. The psychologist that has meetings with the employess also looks and behaves very robotic like which was unsettling and weird.
The explanation for the strange conversation we saw in the first scene is explained later in the episode, however, there was still the question regarding the reason for doing this extreme procedure. Why would people voluntarily agree to this?
A significant part of the story is about the personal and social life of the main character outside his job, and I have to say these scenes could get very boring at the beginning. They didn't add anything too valuable to the show, and I guess they were included just to show the viewers this guy was a normal person. That is until a mysterious character makes an appearance in the latter half of the first episode and a sort of quest begins for our main character to uncover the secrets of the soulless corporation.
It is hard for me to discuss the nature of the special procedure that gets applied in this corporation without giving it away, but let's just say it is related to the memory, as the first scene makes it clear. Imagine if you could separate your work life from your personal life in the most extreme way you can think of. This series is about that. Manipulating the memory has been a long topic within the scifi genre and this series presents us with a new twist.
Esta serie pertenece a los géneros de ciencia ficción y misterio, pero puede parecer aburrida a primera vista porque la historia trata sobre la vida corporativa de personas que aparentemente tienen trabajos regulares sin nada especial. Incluso muchos de los personajes actuaron como si no pasara nada inusual en sus vidas, al menos al principio.
Resulta que la verdad no podría estar más lejos de eso. La corporación sin alma para la que trabajan estas personas no es una corporación regular, y las vidas que llevan estas personas pueden parecer normales, pero no lo son. Nada que ver.
La serie comienza con una primera escena que deja en claro que algo extraño está pasando, algo que no puede ser explicado por la ciencia o la tecnología convencionales. Algo espeluznante, aterrador y tal vez incluso siniestro.
Recomiendo prestar atención a la cara del personaje principal cuando está a punto de salir del ascensor y es posible que notes algo un poco raro en lo que sucedió allí. Fue entonces cuando comencé a crear mis propias teorías sobre lo que podría estar sucediendo en este lugar.

La psicólogo que tiene reuniones con los empleados también se ve y se comporta de manera muy robótica, lo cual fue inquietante y extraño.
La explicación de la extraña conversación que vimos en la primera escena se explica más adelante en el episodio, sin embargo, aún quedaba la pregunta sobre el motivo de realizar este procedimiento extremo. ¿Por qué la gente estaría de acuerdo voluntariamente con esto?
Una parte importante de la historia trata sobre la vida personal y social del personaje principal fuera de su trabajo, y debo decir que estas escenas pueden volverse muy aburridas al principio. No agregaron nada demasiado valioso al programa, y supongo que se incluyeron solo para mostrarles a los espectadores que este tipo era una persona normal. There is a sort of debate going on within society questioning the validity of this procedure in the legal sense but also in the moral one. Many people have deep suspicion but they are unable to do anything about it.
The corporate dynamics inside the corporation are based on a very dystopic way of life, one that could hardly be considered as healthy and desirable. The only reason why a corporation would create such a procedure is probably that it can allow them to hide their dirty secrets, as well as all types of atrocities they might have committed.
This is for me the biggest mystery of the story. Why did this corporation invest so many resources in creating everything related to this procedure? What were their true intentions? Are the workers really voluntarily agreeing to it? These were the questions I wanted the series to answer as the season kept advancing.
The entire corporation is super secretive and even the job the main characters do during their office hours is impossible to decipher. They categorize some random numbers following a very weird logic and in short words, they don't even know what is the actual data behind the encrypted numbers they move around on the screen.
They only have contact with the people that work in their own department and with their boss. They don't know how many departments there are, and they never hang out with anyone from a different deparment. Everything is always surrounded by mystery and secrecy.
In the second half of the series, it becomes clear there is an element of rebelliousness within several employees across 2 departments and we can discover the corporation has very Machiavellian strategies to prevent people from developing friendships across departments.
They want the employees to feel not only isolated and alone but also estranged from the other departments. The classical phrase "divide and conquer" came to my mind when I realized this.
The building has draconian security measures, and this is made clear when a new employee constantly tries to figure out ways to stop working in this corporation. It turns out that quitting isn't as easy as it is with a normal job.
Existe una especie de debate en la sociedad que cuestiona la validez de este procedimiento en el sentido legal pero también en el moral. Muchas personas tienen profundas sospechas pero no pueden hacer nada al respecto.
La dinámica corporativa dentro de la corporación se basa en una forma de vida muy distópica, que difícilmente podría considerarse saludable y deseable. La única razón por la que una corporación crearía un procedimiento de este tipo es probablemente que puede permitirles ocultar sus sucios secretos, así como todo tipo de atrocidades que puedan haber cometido.
Este es para mí el mayor misterio de la historia. ¿Por qué esta corporación invirtió tantos recursos en crear todo lo relacionado con este procedimiento? ¿Cuáles eran sus verdaderas intenciones? ¿Los trabajadores realmente lo aceptan voluntariamente? Estas eran las preguntas que quería que respondiera la serie a medida que avanzaba la temporada.
Toda la corporación es súper reservada e incluso el trabajo que realizan los personajes principales durante sus horas de oficina es imposible de descifrar. Clasifican algunos números aleatorios siguiendo una lógica muy extraña y, en pocas palabras, ni siquiera saben cuál es la información real detrás de los números encriptados que mueven en la pantalla.
Solo tienen contacto con las personas que trabajan en su propio departamento y con su jefe. No saben cuántos departamentos hay y casi nunca hablan con alguien de un departamento diferente. Todo está siempre rodeado de misterio y secreto.
En la segunda mitad de la serie, queda claro que hay un elemento de rebeldía entre varios empleados de 2 departamentos y podemos descubrir que la corporación tiene estrategias muy maquiavélicas para evitar que las personas desarrollen amistades entre departamentos.
Quieren que los empleados se sientan no solo aislados y solos, sino también alejados de los demás departamentos. La clásica frase "divide y vencerás" vino a mi mente cuando me di cuenta de esto.
El edificio cuenta con medidas de seguridad draconianas, y esto queda claro cuando una nueva empleada intenta constantemente encontrar formas de dejar de trabajar en esta corporación. Resulta que renunciar no es tan fácil como lo es con un trabajo normal.
There is a conversation in episode 2 where a character shares his theory about what they are actually doing, proving to the viewer they are also lost and confused about everything going on inside this weird place.
There is an important moment in episode 4 that reminded me of a disturbing moment from the Black Mirror episode called White Christmas. The disturbing thing was different, but similar in the way that these both productions showed examples of a person pretty much imprisoning and even enslaving a part of themselves for the benefit of their free partial self.
If you could, would you enslave a part of yourself to benefit anotherpart of yourself knowing that your free portion wouldn't have to suffer from the partial slavery? This can be a mind-bending question and I love when sci-fi creations make you think weird thoughts like this.
Final thoughts
I am happy to see these streaming services exploring new ideas and producing original stories time after time. It has been a good while since I saw a scifi-mystery production I can consider a masterpiece, I think it was Devs, a Hulu series from 2020.
Severance brings something completely new and a bit shocking to the genre. The apparent normality of some parts of the story can make all of the crazy events even more puzzling to the viewers because no one would expect such a level of craziness in this everyday setting that many people experience on a daily basis.
The series can be considered a groundbreaking production that will be hard to forget for the people who decide to watch it due to its new scifi concept related to memory. It is one of the productions I have enjoyed the most this year, and I really wish more series of this quality and originality continue to be produced in the coming months and years.
As the Mandalorian would say, this is the way.
Nevertheless, the series could have had more intensity throughout the entire season, and the dialogues could have also been better. Devs, for example, was a scifi series that also took place in what appear to be a normal everyday setting, but I never felt it was a slow-paced production. Whereas Severance could become a bit boring despite its good mystery.
The series has a cliffhanger type of ending, so don't expect important questions to be answered this season. There must be a season 2 in development because there is still a lot of secrets to uncover about this dystopian corporation.
Hay una conversación en el episodio 2 donde un personaje comparte su teoría sobre lo que realmente están haciendo, demostrando al espectador que también está perdido y confundido acerca de todo lo que sucede dentro de este extraño lugar.
Hay un momento importante en el episodio 4 que me recordó un momento inquietante del episodio de Black Mirror llamado White Christmas. Lo inquietante era diferente pero similar en la forma en que ambas producciones mostraban ejemplos de una persona que encarcelaba e incluso esclavizaba una parte de sí misma en beneficio de su ser parcial libre.

Reflexiones finales
Me alegra ver que estos servicios de streaming exploran nuevas ideas y producen historias originales una y otra vez. Ha pasado un buen tiempo desde que vi una producción de ciencia ficción y misterio que puedo considerar una obra maestra, creo que fue Devs, una serie de Hulu de 2020.
Severance trae algo completamente nuevo y un poco impactante al género. La aparente normalidad de algunas partes de la historia puede hacer que todos los eventos locos sean aún más desconcertantes para los espectadores porque nadie esperaría tal nivel de locura en este entorno cotidiano que muchas personas experimentan a diario.
La serie puede considerarse una producción innovadora que será difícil de olvidar para las personas que decidan verla debido a su nuevo concepto de ciencia ficción relacionado con la memoria. Es una de las producciones que más he disfrutado este año, y realmente deseo que se sigan produciendo más series de esta calidad y originalidad en los próximos meses y años.
Como diría el Mandalorian, este es el camino.
No obstante, la serie podría haber tenido más intensidad a lo largo de toda la temporada, y los diálogos también podrían haber sido mejores. Devs, por ejemplo, fue una serie de ciencia ficción que también se desarrollaba en lo que parece ser un escenario normal de todos los días, pero nunca sentí que fuera una producción de ritmo lento. Mientras que Severance podría volverse un poco aburrido a pesar de su buen misterio.
