I had this series in my to-watch list for quite some time and was simply waiting for a time with no new cool series so I could give this a binge-watch. I was expecting a properly developed crime story with some sinister aspects involved with it.
What was the series about?
The series takes place in Iceland, a very small country with cold weather and usually considered an extremely peaceful place. Right at the beginning of the series, we see a violent murder taking place, no explanation is given, nothing about why is this crime happening, nothing at all.
We will learn along with the police characters, who is behind these murders, and what is the reason for them. Is this simply a person going crazy and unleashing crimes on innocent people he randomly finds, or is there a macabre justification for so much sadism?
Since there aren't many crimes in Iceland, especially murders as savages as the one shown in this film, the police begin to feel overwhelmed by all of it. Not only do they have to catch a very dangerous murderer, but the public is also pressuring them somehow.
The main character in this story is Kala, a female detective that will be the person in charge of the whole investigation. She has good principles and values, and this will be very important as the story advances.
Eventually, she will receive the help of another Icelandic detective living in Norway and the 2 of them will become the driving forces trying to solve all of these crazy crimes. They will interview a lot of people, and find clues where most would simply be unable to find anything.
Tenía esta serie en mi lista de pendientes durante bastante tiempo y simplemente estaba esperando un momento sin nuevas series geniales para poder darle un maraton. Esperaba una historia criminal adecuadamente desarrollada con algunos aspectos siniestros involucrados.
¿De qué trataba la serie?
La serie tiene lugar en Islandia, un país muy pequeño con clima frío y generalmente considerado un lugar extremadamente pacífico. Justo al comienzo de la serie, vemos que tiene lugar un asesinato violento, no se da ninguna explicación, nada sobre por qué ocurre este crimen, nada en absoluto.
Aprenderemos junto a los personajes policiales, quién está detrás de estos asesinatos, y cuál es el motivo de los mismos. ¿Se trata simplemente de una persona que se está volviendo loca y desatando crímenes sobre personas inocentes que encuentra al azar, o hay una macabra justificación para tanto sadismo?
Como no hay muchos crímenes en Islandia, especialmente asesinatos tan salvajes como los que se muestran en esta película, la policía comienza a sentirse abrumada por todo ello. No solo tienen que atrapar a un asesino muy peligroso, sino que el público también los está presionando de alguna manera.
La protagonista de esta historia es Kala, una detective que será la encargada de toda la investigación. Tiene buenos principios y valores, y esto será muy importante a medida que avance la historia.
Eventualmente, recibirá la ayuda de otro detective islandés que vive en Noruega y los dos se convertirán en las fuerzas impulsoras que intentan resolver todos estos crímenes locos. Entrevistarán a mucha gente y encontrarán pistas donde la mayoría simplemente no podría encontrar nada.
The lives of a lot of people involved with be at risk during different moments, and surviving it all might be very unlikely. There will be a lot of time dedicated to how the police detectives do their jobs in a meticulous way, and it might be boring to some people, but if the crime genre is of your liking, I think you could very well enjoy this one.
Regarding the story, I later read it was loosely based on some real-life events that happened in Iceland but excluding the murders, so it isn't really based on something real. However, I do remember watching a Youtube video some time ago, about a place in America where some events were very similar to the background events of this story. I prefer not to share the video in the post since I guess it could be considered a little spoiler, but if you want to know about the video then just ask me in the comments below and I will share the link with you.
Main names associated with the series
The main person behind the film was Thordur Palsson, he worked both as a director as well as the main writer. This was the first time he worked in a regular-length production because all of his previous works were in shorts and his final results with this were quite good.
Ottar Nordfjord was another writer that participated in all of the episodes, and he has even less experience than Thordur. This was the first time Ottar worked as a writer in his entire career. So there isn't anything to mention regarding his previous works.
Margrét Örnólfsdóttir was the most experienced writer and in total, she has participated in 10 different productions as a writer, mostly in series. Some of her previous works were in Trapped, The Flatey Enigma, and Fangar.
When it comes to the cast, the main member was Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir who played the main character called Kala, a police detective with a lot of intelligence and dedication. We can also find this actress in the series Blackport, as well as in Trapped and Fangar. It is clear she and Margrét have a good professional relationship.
Las vidas de muchas personas involucradas estarán en riesgo en diferentes momentos, y sobrevivir a todo podría ser muy poco probable. Habrá mucho tiempo dedicado a cómo los detectives de la policía hacen su trabajo de manera meticulosa, y puede ser aburrido para algunas personas, pero si el género policial es de tu agrado, creo que podrías disfrutarlo mucho.
Con respecto a la historia, más tarde leí que se basaba en algunas partes en algunos eventos de la vida real que sucedieron en Islandia, pero excluyendo los asesinatos, por lo que no se basa realmente en algo real. How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the written work?
The performances from the cast were good, and at the beginning of the series there was even a funny scene that was very well acted but the general tone of the series is very dark and serious because they are dealing with murders.
There were, however, some things I didn't like, such as for example when an old man somehow outruns a female police, which didn't make sense at all. And during some other moments, the characters weren't intelligent enough to protect their own backs while in dangerous situations, which didn't make sense because real police officers are always very alert and aware of their surroundings.
The scenery was nice, I believe this is the first time I see a production set in Iceland, and it was cool to see something different for once.
Final thoughts
The Valhalla Murders was a very decent crime series, properly written and nicely acted produced something that is surely worth watching, especially for people who enjoy stories based on police characters that are giving their best to solve hard and sinister cases.
The series naturally has some twists and surprises, which is normal for this type of story, and it also had a very satisfactory ending with no loose ends whatsoever. I believe most people would enjoy watching it.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la escenografía y el trabajo de escritura?
Las actuaciones del elenco fueron buenas, e incluso al principio de la serie hubo una escena divertida que estuvo muy bien actuada pero el tono general de la serie es muy oscuro y serio porque se trata de asesinatos.
Sin embargo, hubo algunas cosas que no me gustaron, como por ejemplo cuando un anciano de alguna manera supera corriendo a una mujer policía, lo cual no tenía ningún sentido. Y durante algunos otros momentos, los personajes no eran lo suficientemente inteligentes como para proteger sus propias espaldas en situaciones peligrosas, lo que no tenía sentido porque los policías reales siempre están muy alertas y conscientes de su entorno.
El paisaje estuvo bien, creo que esta es la primera vez que veo una historia ambientada en Islandia, y fue genial ver algo diferente por una vez.
Reflexiones finales
The Valhalla Murders fue una serie criminal muy decente, bien escrita y bien interpretada, produjo algo que seguramente vale la pena ver, especialmente para las personas que disfrutan de las historias basadas en personajes policiales que dan lo mejor de sí para resolver casos difíciles y siniestros.
La serie naturalmente tiene algunos giros y sorpresas, lo cual es normal en este tipo de historias, y además tuvo un final muy satisfactorio y sin cabos sueltos de ningún tipo. Creo que la mayoría de la gente disfrutaría viéndola.
