Many years ago I remember there was an HBO series called Carnivàle and it had this look of mystery coupled with the exotic dynamics of a carnival and the result was fascinating to me. Many years later, AHS released a season called freak show, and the settings were pretty much the same, a carnival with strange people and some dark things involving them.
Nightmare Alley is the third production that I can remember, that mixes the mystery-thriller genres with a carnival as its main setting. This was another reason that made this movie very attractive for me to watch.
What was the movie about?
The story is about a character named Stanton Carlisle and right at the beginning of the film, we can see this man is dangerous and cannot be trusted. He eventually finds a job at a carnival where he uses his creative skills to earn a living and he even manages to improve one of their acts.
Carlisle is the type of person that can pretend to be nice and gentle when in reality he is only trying to figure out a way to advance his agenda, even if this means screwing over other people who trust in him. He is probably a psychopath and does a great job hiding this from other people.
After quite a while in the carnival where he didn't only work but also learned a lot, he and a woman who he met there, decide to leave and begin a journey on their own. His plan is to become a mentalist and from this point on, his entire life will go through massive changes.
The film explores the derailment that people can suffer when consumed by uncontrollable greed, and not only that, it can also show that when people don't have integrity, it is usually a matter of time before things turn bad.
Hace muchos años recuerdo que había una serie de HBO llamada Carnivale y tenía ese aspecto de misterio junto con la dinámica exótica de un carnaval y el resultado me resultó fascinante. Muchos años después, AHS lanzó una temporada llamada Freak Show, y los escenarios eran más o menos los mismos, un carnaval con gente extraña y algunas cosas oscuras que los involucraban.
Nightmare Alley es la tercera producción que recuerdo, que mezcla los géneros de misterio-thriller con un carnaval como escenario principal. Esta fue otra razón que hizo que esta película fuera muy atractiva para mí.

Carlisle is simply a con man that uses carnival's tricks to get money from people who believe in what he says, and the most intense parts of the movie are when he tries his best to maintain the credibility of his acts. The ending includes a good twist that makes the movie even more dramatic and for me, more enjoyable as well.
Main names associated with the film
As mentioned before, the director is Guillermo del Toro who is known for creating weird-looking films such as Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. However, my favorite films from this director are Crimson Peak and now Nightmare Alley as well. Del Toro also worked as one of the writers for this film, and he even has more experience as a writer than as a director, which might be surprising to know for many people.
Kim Morgan was the other writer of the film and this was just her second time working in a regular-length production. Her previous writing job was in 2015 with a film called The Forbidden Room.
Bradley Cooper is the actor who plays the main role. He works in carnivals and is very talented at tricking people and deceiving them. He is good at creating new shows, and will eventually start to work as a very impressive mentalist. Some of his best movies so far are American Sniper, American Hustle, and The Hangover trilogy.
Cate Blanchett plays what I consider to be the second main character of the story. Her character is a psychiatrist who will eventually partner up with Cooper's character to improve the quality of his mentalist's lies. Some of the best films of her career are Blue Jasmine and Carol.
Rooney Mara plays a colleague of Cooper's character. She also works at carnivals making tricks for the clients, but she is much more honest and less Machiavellian than Cooper's character. We can also find this actress in other films such as Mary Magdalene, Side Effects, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Carlisle es simplemente un estafador que usa trucos de carnaval para obtener dinero de las personas que creen en lo que dice, y las partes más intensas de la película son cuando hace todo lo posible para mantener la credibilidad de sus actos. How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?
There were many other talented actors and actresses apart from those I mentioned just above, and the entire movie had excellent performances all over the place. There was not a single character that felt like a misfit or anything like that.
The scenery was excellently done. It was absolutely beautiful especially in the scenes that take place in the carnival. But even after those scenes are over, the film continues to provide amazing visuals until the very end. The camera work helped a lot in making the visuals so attractive and impressive to watch.
All the people involved in the film, the director, writers, and actors were amazing and this is why Nightmare Alley is among my favorite films by Guillermo del Toro. It was very well done.
Final thoughts
Nightmare Alley provides us with a story that has some dark elements and a very excellent twist towards the end. The only thing I criticize is that it felt very slow-paced at times, and its length ended up being 2.5 hours. I do believe this story could have been reduced to a more reasonable length around the 2 hours limit.
Nevertheless, the story is intriguing and entertaining. Most people will probably have a good time watching it so I completely recommend it to everyone. It is very original and among the best ones I have seen in recent weeks.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la escenografía y el trabajo de cámara?
Hubo muchos otros actores y actrices talentosos además de los que mencioné anteriormente, y toda la película tuvo excelentes actuaciones en todos lados. No hubo un solo personaje que se sintiera como un inadaptado o algo por el estilo.
El escenario fue excelentemente hecho. Fue absolutamente hermoso, especialmente en las escenas que tienen lugar en el carnaval. Pero incluso después de que terminan esas escenas, la película continúa brindando imágenes increíbles hasta el final. Reflexiones finales
Nightmare Alley nos brinda una historia que tiene algunos elementos oscuros y un excelente giro hacia el final. Lo único que critico es que a veces se sentía muy lento y su duración terminó siendo de 2,5 horas. Creo que esta historia podría haberse reducido a una duración más razonable alrededor del límite de 2 horas.
Sin embargo, la historia es intrigante y entretenida. La mayoría de la gente probablemente pasará un buen rato viéndola, así que lo recomiendo completamente a todos. Es muy original y de las mejores que he visto en las últimas semanas.
