First of all, this is a very special type of film and finding other ones for comparison isn't easy. There are not extremely popular productions that could be compared to this one. Among the films I have watched over the years, the ones I would say could be comparable due to their similar styles are I Origins, and maybe Another Earth.
The reason why I find these films similar is that in all of them there is an important discovery that changes the human understanding of our reality and our place in the universe, but there aren't flashy lights or anything like that. These are simply about normal people that find themselves in a position to move our knowledge one step ahead, this is especially the case in the films I, Origins, and Clara.
These aren't films with extremely high budgets, it is in fact completely the opposite, but their lack of budget doesn't prevent them from delivering an enjoyable story.
What was the movie about?
The movie follows an astronomer called Isaac who works as a professor in a university. He has become obsessed with finding life on other planets and when questioned about it by a student, he provides an educated answer that also shows some signs of hostility or maybe frustration.
His obsession ends up causing him some problems with his boss and he finds himself in a situation where he can only continue with his investigations in his home, with no professional help analyzing any of his data. Luckily for him, an artist accepts to work for him, and together they will accomplish a historic feat.
The entire plot is conditioned by dramatic and sad events around the life of Isaac. We will learn about a traumatic event that happened in his past, and during the movie, there will also be another tragic event affecting him. However, all of this will allow him to ultimately change the world with his investigations.
En primer lugar, este es un tipo de película muy especial y encontrar otras para comparar no es fácil. No hay producciones extremadamente populares que puedan compararse con esta. Entre las películas que he visto a lo largo de los años, las que diría que podrían ser comparables debido a sus estilos similares son I Origins y quizás Another Earth.
La razón por la que encuentro estas películas similares es que en todas hay un descubrimiento importante que cambia la comprensión humana de nuestra realidad y nuestro lugar en el universo, pero no hay luces llamativas ni nada por el estilo. Se trata simplemente de personas normales que se encuentran en posición de hacer avanzar nuestro conocimiento un paso más adelante, este es especialmente el caso en las películas I origins y Clara.
No se trata de películas con presupuestos altísimos, es todo lo contrario, pero su falta de presupuesto no les impide ofrecer una historia muy buena.
¿De qué trataba la película?
La película sigue a un astrónomo llamado Isaac que trabaja como profesor en una universidad. Se ha obsesionado con encontrar vida en otros planetas y cuando un estudiante le pregunta al respecto, proporciona una respuesta educada que también muestra algunos signos de hostilidad o tal vez frustración por parte del profesor.
Su obsesión termina por causarle algunos problemas con su jefe y se encuentra en una situación en la que solo puede continuar con sus investigaciones en su casa, sin ayuda profesional para analizar ninguno de sus datos. Por suerte para él, una artista acepta trabajar para él y juntos lograrán una hazaña histórica.
Toda la trama está condicionada por acontecimientos dramáticos y tristes en torno a la vida de Isaac. Aprenderemos sobre un evento traumático que sucedió en su pasado y, durante la película, también habrá otro evento trágico que lo afectará. Sin embargo, todo esto le permitirá finalmente cambiar el mundo con sus investigaciones.
Just like the 2 main characters, a scientist and a bohemian artist, are completely the opposite of each other in some ways, the film also tries to reconcile 2 ways of approaching the understanding of our world and of reality itself. There is the objective way based on actual observable and measurable data, and then the other way based on perceptions and having an internal connection with everything there is, or in other words, the bohemian way.
The film has touching moments in the very end, but for me the entire film was enjoyable from the very beginning. This is a topic that has always fascinated me and it was cool seeing it used as the story of a film.
Main names associated with the film
Akash Sherman was the director and the main writer of the film, I guess he can be regarded as the creator of this entire story. So far in his career all of his directing jobs have been with stories written by himself as well, some examples would be The Rocket List, and 2 shorts called For Them, for You and A Teaching Game.
The other writer was James Ewasiuk and he has always worked with Sherman so far. He participated as a writer in The Rocket List too.
Patrick J. Adams played the main role in the story. He is an astronomer and for personal reasons that are related to a big loss he suffered in the past, he is very serious about finding life in other parts of the universe. He has participated in other productions such as the series Suits, as well as the movies Old School and 6 Month Rule.
Así como los 2 personajes principales, un científico y una artista bohemia, son completamente opuestos entre sí en algunos aspectos, la película también intenta reconciliar 2 formas de abordar la comprensión de nuestro mundo y de la realidad misma. Está el camino objetivo basado en datos reales observables y medibles, y luego el otro camino basado en percepciones y teniendo una conexión interna con todo lo que hay, o en otras palabras, el camino bohemio.
La película tiene momentos conmovedores al final, pero para mí toda la película fue disfrutable desde el principio. Este es un tema que siempre me ha fascinado y fue genial verlo utilizado como la historia de una película.

Akash Sherman fue el director y el escritor principal de la película, supongo que se le puede considerar el creador de toda esta historia. Hasta ahora en su carrera, todos sus trabajos de dirección han sido con historias escritas por él mismo, algunos ejemplos serían The Rocket List y 2 cortos llamados For Them, for You y A Teaching Game.
El otro escritor fue James Ewasiuk y hasta ahora siempre ha trabajado con Sherman. También participó como escritor en The Rocket List.
Patrick J. Adams desempeñó el papel principal en la historia. Es astrónomo y por motivos personales relacionados con una gran pérdida que sufrió en el pasado, se toma muy en serio la búsqueda de vida en otras partes del universo. How were the performance from the cast and the writing work?
I didn't know any of the actors and actresses present in this film which is normal given the fact this was an indie film. However, I was happy with what the cast members provided in terms of acting performances, although I believe the main actor could have been a little more expressive and emotionally intense during some moments. Nevertheless, I would say both main cast members did an all right job and allowed the movie to be enjoyable.
The story itself was well written and I would bet the writer either had knowledge about how the astronomy community works, or he requested the help of a real astronomer. It even had some touching moments towards the end that I personally loved.
I was also a bit surprised at how they figured out a way to explore a scifi event that might actually end up happening in our coming decades, but I have never thought it could happen in the way this movie is showing it.
Final thoughts
If you enjoyed the 2 films I mentioned at the beginning of the article, I think there is a high chance of you enjoying this film since their styles are somewhat similar. Also, if you are intrigued by what an indie production combining scifi and romance can deliver, then certainly check this movie out.
I enjoyed it a lot mainly because its topic is something that has interested me since I was a kid. I believe most people can enjoy it, but it can feel a bit slow during some moments of the first half. In my opinion, having patience with the film pays off in the end.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco y el trabajo de escritura?
No conocía a ninguno de los actores y actrices presentes en esta película, lo cual es normal dado que se trata de una película independiente. Sin embargo, estuve contento con lo que los miembros del elenco brindaron en términos de actuación, aunque creo que el actor principal podría haber sido un poco más expresivo y emocionalmente intenso en algunos momentos. Sin embargo, diría que los dos miembros principales del reparto hicieron un buen trabajo y permitieron que la película fuera disfrutable.
La historia en sí estaba bien escrita y apostaría a que el escritor sabía cómo funciona la comunidad astronómica o solicitó la ayuda de un astrónomo real. Incluso tuvo algunos momentos conmovedores hacia el final que personalmente me encantaron.
También me sorprendió un poco cómo descubrieron una manera de explorar un evento de ciencia ficción que podría terminar sucediendo en nuestras próximas décadas, pero nunca pensé que podría suceder de la manera en que lo muestra esta película.

Si disfrutaste las 2 películas que mencioné al comienzo del artículo, creo que hay muchas posibilidades de que disfrutes esta película ya que sus estilos son algo similares. Además, si estás intrigado por lo que puede ofrecer una producción independiente que combine ciencia ficción y romance, entonces no dudes en echarle un vistazo a esta película.
La disfruté mucho principalmente porque su tema es algo que me ha interesado desde que era niño. Creo que la mayoría de la gente puede disfrutarla, pero puede sentirse un poco lenta durante algunos momentos de la primera mitad. En mi opinión, tener paciencia con la película al final vale la pena.
