Hola amigos, nuevamente les traigo una super reseña, aunque en esta ocasión no será de una serie de entretenimiento o una película. Sino que se trata de una serie-documental titulada como “Sé dócil, reza y obedece” (en español), estrenada este año en Netflix.

Hello friends, once again I bring you a super review, although this time it won't be of an entertainment series or a movie. Rather it is about a documentary series titled as "Keep Sweet: pray and obey", released this year on Netflix.

SYNOPSIS

A veces los sucesos de la vida real superan cualquier escalofrío generado por la ficción, eso es lo que veremos/sentiremos con esta miniserie documental que consta de cuatro capítulos de una hora aproximadamente. Y nos cuenta las aterradoras experiencias de víctimas de la Iglesia Fundamentalista de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, FLDS (por sus siglas en inglés).

Sometimes real life events surpass any shiver generated by fiction, that's what we will see/feel with this documentary miniseries that consists of four chapters of approximately one hour. And it tells us the terrifying experiences of victims of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

Antes de explicarles un poco del documental hay que abrir un paréntesis sobre lo mencionado anteriorme. La FLDS es una bifurcación de los mormones o de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días (SUD, por sus siglas en inglés). Y se hacen llamar como “los fundamentalistas”. Ambos se consideran mormones, pero la diferencia entre ambas doctrinas es que los FLDS creen y promueven la poligamia como un medio para obtener la ascensión al reino de Dios, mientras que los de la SUD se alejaron de los preceptos de la poligamia. Esto es importante saberlo,para entender la historia.

Before explaining a little bit about the documentary, it is necessary to open a parenthesis on the above mentioned. The FLDS is a fork of the Mormons or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS). And they call themselves "the fundamentalists". Both consider themselves Mormons, but the difference between the two doctrines is that the FLDS believe in and promote polygamy as a means to obtain ascension to the kingdom of God, while the LDS have moved away from the precepts of polygamy. This is important to know, in order to understand the history.

Yo no sabía. Había escuchado sobre los mormones y en mi familia tenían muy mala fama. Ya entiendo que una de las razones es la confusión entre ambas doctrinas que poseen muchas diferencias pero también similitudes en cuanto a creencias.

I didn't know. I had heard about Mormons and in my family they had a very bad reputation. I understand that one of the reasons is the confusion between the two doctrines which have many differences but also similarities in beliefs.

La miniserie nos muestra las restricciones, el estilo de vida, las diferentes prácticas de poligamia, y las prácticas abusivas que hacen los fundamentalista, muchas veces, en nombre de Dios. Además, nos habla de sus dos principales líderes (aunque prefiero llamarlos mounstruos):

Rulon Jeffs (Padre)
Warren Jeffs (hijo)

Las historias de ellos nos darán arcadas durante toda la serie, o al menos a mí me las generó.

The miniseries shows us the restrictions, the lifestyle, the different polygamy practices, and the abusive practices that the fundamentalists do, many times, in the name of God. It also tells us about their two main leaders (although I prefer to call them monsters):

Their stories will make us gag throughout the series, or at least it did for me.

“Las mujeres están sujetas a sus maridos como al señor”, Efesios 5:22, es el versículo con el que se da inicio al documental. Y es, sin duda alguna, un preaviso de lo que veremos.

Lo cierto es que yo reproduje esta serie con la mayor inocencia del mundo. No sabía lo que estaba viendo, la escogí por el título y la miniatura. Me llaman mucho la atención los documentales y más si son retro, la miniatura tenía ese efecto en VHS y con la cara rallada y tapada de una niña, así que pensé que se trataría de algún crimen o algo por el estilo. Por esa razón me encontré perdida en tiempo y espacio en los primeros dos capítulos.

En el primer capítulo no se entiende muy bien cómo va la historia, no está en un orden cronológico, o al menos no parece así. Se nos van contando cosas que no entendemos mucho. Pero algo que agradezco mucho y que estuve buscando, son los videos y fotografías de los fundamentalistas. Pensé que eran representaciones, pero al parecer son videos reales. Eso les da un plus a los episodios.

Sin embargo volveré a señalar lo del orden, para quien no conoce del tema, como yo, se puede perder en la historia. En los últimos dos capítulos se vuelven a colocar algunas declaraciones que vimos en los primeros episodios pero esta vez contextualizados en tiempo y espacio. Hacemos entonces click con lo que se nos contó.

Ahora bien, los episodios cuentan con la narración de personas que fueron parte de los fundamentalistas. Entre ellos, se encuentran varias víctimas de abuso sexual, poligamia, pedofilia, sometimiento, manipulación…

Wives are subject to their husbands as to the Lord, Ephesians 5:22, is the verse with which the documentary begins. And it is, without a doubt, a forewarning of what we will see.

The truth is that I played this series with the greatest innocence in the world. I didn't know what I was watching, I chose it because of the title and the thumbnail. I am very attracted to documentaries and more if they are retro, the thumbnail had that VHS effect and with the grated and covered face of a girl, so I thought it would be about some crime or something like that. For that reason I found myself lost in time and space in the first two chapters. In the first chapter you don't really understand how the story goes, it's not in a chronological order, or at least it doesn't seem that way. We are being told things that we don't really understand. But something that I really appreciate and that I was looking for, are the videos and photographs of the fundamentalists. I thought they were representations, but apparently they are real videos. That gives the episodes a plus.

However, I will point out again the order, for those who are not familiar with the subject, as I am, can get lost in the story. In the last two chapters some statements that we saw in the first episodes are put back in context in time and space. We then click with what we were told.

Now, the episodes have the narration of people who were part of the fundamentalists. Among them, there are several victims of sexual abuse, polygamy, pedophilia, subjugation, manipulation...

THE MANIPULATION

Este tema debe tener un apartado en esta reseña porque me parece super importante remarcarlo. Esta serie es una muestra pesada de lo que puede lograr un hombre apunta de manipulación. A esto último le añadiría: "Un hombre que cree en la conexión directa con Dios".

This topic should have a section in this review because I think it is very important to point it out. This series is a heavy sample of what can be achieved by a man pointed to manipulation. To the latter I would add: "A man who believes in direct connection with God".

Siempre me ha llamado la atención cómo es el pensamiento y la metodología de un dictador, un psicópata, un criminal, un asesino...un religioso que emplea la manipulación en masas para lograr sus obejtivos. Desde afuera, se vería como "yo no caería en eso". Pero conociendo y siendo una migrante venezolana que vivió en carne propia el proceso con Chávez (y disculpen la mención) sé de primera fuente que no es fácil. Los seguidores de estas personas creen en esa ilusión tan fuerte que se les vende, que es casi imposible de notar que los están manipulando.

I have always been struck by what the thinking and methodology of a dictator, a psychopath, a criminal, a murderer...a religious man who employs mass manipulation to achieve his goals. From the outside, it would look like "I wouldn't fall for that". But knowing and being a Venezuelan migrant who lived the process with Chavez first hand (and excuse the mention) I know first hand that it is not easy. The followers of these people believe in such a strong illusion that is sold to them, that it is almost impossible to notice that they are being manipulated.

Y chicos, sin ánimos de onfender ninguna religión, pero con esta miniserie me quedó claro que fue lo que pasó con todas esas personas: cayeron en una manipulación agresiva y tenaz, amparada por la religión fundamentalista. Sí, tristemente, todavía existen estas Iglesias.

And guys, no offense to any religion, but with this miniseries it became clear to me what happened to all these people: they fell into an aggressive and tenacious manipulation, protected by fundamentalist religion. Yes, sadly, these churches still exist.

Yo lloré con el último capítulo, Warren Jeffs me parece un tipo sin escrúpulos, ambicioso, mentiroso, un sádico de la peor clase. Y pueden insertar más adjetivos descalificativos. Para los fundamentalistas, las mujeres eran una moneda de curso. Los líderes escogían con quien se debían casar. Y la cantidad de esposas que tenía un miembro hablaba de su posición en la jerarquía de la Iglesia.

I cried with the last chapter, Warren Jeffs seems to me an unscrupulous, ambitious, liar, a sadist of the worst kind. And you can insert more disqualifying adjectives. For the fundamentalists, women were a currency. The leaders chose whom they should marry. And the number of wives a member had spoke of his position in the hierarchy of the Church.

¿RECOMIENDO VER LA SERIE?

Por su puesto, creo que es un deber que conozcamos cómo opera la maldad en el mundo para que no se siga repitiendo. Además de que nos nutre y nos abre los ojos sobre el horror en el que viven algunas personas, nos pone en alerta a nosotros mismos.

Admiro la valentía de quienes participaron en el documental dando su testimonio. Porque nos explicaron cómo se vive el amor, la familia, el matrimonio, hasta la niñez en este tipo de sectas.

DO I RECOMMEND WATCHING THE SERIES?

Of course, I think it is a duty for us to know how evil operates in the world so that it does not keep repeating itself. Además de que nos nutre y nos abre los ojos sobre el horror en el que viven algunas personas, nos pone en alerta a nosotros mismos. I admire the courage of those who participated in the documentary by giving their testimony. Because they explained to us how love, family, marriage and even childhood are lived in this type of sects.
