The good thing about having made a long trekking trip is that we had the opportunity to visit several shelters in El Bolsón along the way. Each one of them has its own charm and style: some more rustic and others more elegant, but all with the same mountain essence. It was quite exciting to arrive at each new establishment, especially when neither my friends nor I had not seen photos of the places. This left us to be amazed by each one, some because of how nice they were and others because of their own peculiarities 😅.
Lo bueno de haber hecho una larga travesía de trekking es que tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar varios refugios de El Bolsón a nuestro paso. Cada uno de ellos tiene su encanto y estilo: algunos más rústicos y otros más elegantes, pero todos con la misma esencia de montaña. Era bastante emocionante llegar a cada nuevo establecimiento, más cuando ninguno de mis amigos ni yo no habíamos visto fotos de los lugares. Esto nos dejó sorprendernos con cada uno, algunos por lo lindos que eran y otros por sus propias peculiaridades 😅.
Within our four-day mountain plan we managed to visit three refuges in less than 24 hours. Starting from Las Horquetas Refuge, the last one we visited, we had a remaining 11 km of road ahead of us until we reached our final goal, Los Laguitos Refuge. This refuge is the farthest of all, with 25 km of trail in total, and represents the great challenge for all those who go trekking in El Bolsón. On this trail, you will go through forests, meadows, many slopes and also along the beautiful Azul River, which with its characteristic color is always ready for photos 😃.
Dentro de nuestro plan de cuatro días en la montaña logramos conocer tres refugios en menos de 24 horas. Partiendo desde el Refugio Las Horquetas, el último que visitamos, teníamos por delante un camino de 11 km restante hasta llegar a nuestro objetivo final, el Refugio Los Laguitos. Este refugio es el más lejano de todos, con 25 km de sendero en total, y representa el gran desafío para todos los que van a hacer trekking a El Bolsón. En este camino, se atraviesan bosques, praderas, muchos desniveles y también se costea el hermoso Río Azul, que con su color característico siempre está preparado para las fotos 😃.
My two friends and I were quite rested after spending the night at El Retamal Refuge, so we kept the hike at a brisk pace. We took the opportunity to start walking early, with the idea of having lunch somewhere along the way. It was then that we came across a sign indicating a detour to Los Mañíos Refuge, one that was not in our plans but was nearby and further ahead had a return to the main trail. It sounded good, so we took the time to visit it 😃.
Mis dos amigos y yo estábamos bastante descansados después de pasar la noche en el Refugio El Retamal, así que la caminata la mantuvimos con un paso ligero. Aprovechamos para empezar a caminar temprano, con la idea de almorzar en algún punto intermedio del camino. Fue en eso que nos encontramos con una cartelería que indicaba un desvío hacia el Refugio Los Mañíos, uno que no estaba en nuestros planes pero que quedaba cerca y más adelante tenía un retorno hacia el sendero principal. Sonaba bien, así que nos tomamos el tiempo para visitarlo 😃.
The refuge was one of those that are rustic, but unlike the others we had seen, it had a well prepared camping area. They lent you crockery in case you needed it, which allowed us to have a civilized lunch with the things we had brought to eat, as well as a great view. Everything was going in order, until a while before leaving we decided to go to the bathroom, as there was still a long way to go 😶.
El refugio era de aquellos que son rústicos, pero a diferencia de los otros que habíamos visto, tenía una zona de camping bien preparada. Ellos te prestaban vajilla en caso de que lo necesites, lo que nos permitió tener un almuerzo civilizado con las cosas que habíamos llevado para comer, además de una gran vista. Todo marchaba en orden, hasta que un rato antes de irnos decidimos pasar al baño, ya que faltaba un buen tramo aún 😶.
So far, the bathrooms we had seen in the previous refuges were all dry bathrooms, as there usually are in these types of remote places. A dry toilet consists of a deep pit in the ground, with a latrine placed on top for greater comfort. Then there is usually a bucket of sawdust to dump on top, which acts as an odor absorber. Of course, don't expect electric light in this type of bathroom, so it's best to do your things during the day or juggling your cell phone flashlight. But the bathroom in this refuge didn't have this lighting problem, as it was only covered with 3 walls, leaving the entire front of the bathroom open. Of course this space is quite far from the refuge so that no one can see you while you are using it. In addition, there was a sign on the door to indicate whether the bathroom was free or occupied, so no one had to come and check it on their own and be surprised. This was a source of much amusement among my friends and I, but we still used it because it was very clean, even cleaner than the other bathrooms 😃.
Hasta el momento, los baños que habíamos visto en los refugios anteriores eran todos baños secos, como suele haber en este tipo de lugares tan alejados. Un baño seco consiste en un pozo profundo en la tierra, al que le ponen una letrina encima para más comodidad. Luego, suele haber un balde con aserrín para volcarle encima, lo que actúa como absorbente de olores. Por supuesto, no esperes luz eléctrica en este tipo de baños, así que lo mejor es hacer tus cosas de día o haciendo malabares con la linterna del celular. Pero el baño de este refugio no tenía este problema de iluminación, ya que solo estaba cubierto con 3 paredes, dejando todo el frente del baño abierto. Por supuesto que este espacio está bastante alejado del refugio de tal forma que nadie puede verte mientras lo estás usando. Además, en su puerta había un cartel para indicar si el baño estaba libre u ocupado, así nadie tenía que acercarse a verificarlo por su cuenta y llevarse una sorpresa. Esto fue motivo de mucha gracia entre mis amigos y yo, pero igualmente lo usamos porque estaba muy limpio, incluso más limpio que los demás baños 😃.

One of the things I like most about Hive is that for everything you can think of, there is always a community dedicated to it (and if there isn't, it might be your time to create one). I don't know if I ever had it in mind to write about a bathroom, but I knew there was this @livingUKtaiwan community and I thought it was fun to highlight this, which was one of the most curious things I saw on this long walk. Of course I visited many dry toilets in all these mountain refuges, but this one definitely gets special recognition, and I thank it for being of service to all the hikers we passed through 🙌.
Una de las cosas que más me gusta de Hive es que para cada cosa que se te ocurra, siempre hay una comunidad destinada a eso (y si no la hay, puede ser tu momento de crear una). No sé si alguna vez tuve en mente escribir sobre un baño, pero sabía que existía esta comunidad de @livingUKtaiwan y me pareció divertido resaltar esto, que fue una de las cosas más curiosas que vi en esta larga caminata. Por supuesto visité muchos baños secos en todos estos refugios de montaña, pero definitivamente este se lleva un reconocimiento especial, y le agradezco por estar al servicio de todos los caminantes que pasamos por ahí 🙌.
