🗺 Biblioteca Vasconcelos – Exploring one of the World’s most unique and futuristic Libraries [EN/DE]

Hey guys! I'm back in Mexico City and last weekend my girlfriend and I visited one of the most fascinating sights of this gigantic metropolis. I am talking about the Vasconcelos Library, which was opened in 2006. In this post I want to tell you why I was so fascinated by this place and what makes it so unique.

Ich bin wieder zurück in Mexico City und und vergangenes Wochenende habe ich gemeinsam mit meiner Freundin eine der faszinierendsten Sehenswürdigkeiten dieser gigantischen Metropole besucht. Es handelt sich um die, im Jahre 2006 eröffnete, Vasconcelos-Bibliothek. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich euch erzählen, warum mich dieser Ort so fasziniert hat und was ihn so einzigartig macht.

Already at my very first stay in Mexico, the Valsconcelos Library was high on my list of places I really wanted to visit. However, at that time I was faced with closed doors. The library was shut down for months due to the pandemic. This time I found a very different scene, even from the outside. I'm not talking about the building itself. From the outside it looks relatively unspectacular and inconspicuous. Rather, I mean an alternative street market that was located in front of the building. During my first visit, there was nothing going on there at all. However, instead of getting into shopping, we went straight through the front door and shortly after stood in the building's main hall.

Bereits bei meinem allerersten Aufenthalt in Mexiko stand die Valsconcelos-Bibliothek ganz weit oben auf meiner Liste von Orten, die ich unbedingt besuchen wollte. Damals stand ich allerdings vor verschlossenen Türen. Die Bibliothek war aufgrund der Pandemie monatelang geschlossen. Diesmal allerdings bot sich mir schon von außen ein ganz anderer Anblick. Damit meine ich nicht das Gebäude selbst. Dieses ist von außen nämlich architektonisch relativ unspektakulär und unauffällig. Ich meine vielmehr einen alternativen Straßenmarkt, der sich vor dem Gebäude befand. Bei meinem ersten Besuch herrschte hier nur gähnende Leere. Anstatt uns ins Shopping-Vergnügen zu stürzen, gingen wir aber direkt durch die Eingangstür und standen kurz darauf in der Haupthalle des Gebäudes.

Here, the special feature of the library was immediately revealed to us. The more than 575,000 books are located in hundreds of shelves spread over a total of seven floors. The unique thing about it is the metal construction, which often gives you the impression that some areas are floating in the air. This makes the interior design of the building, whose construction cost a total of almost 70 million dollars, look insanely futuristic. I could hardly get out of my amazement.

Hier offenbarte sich uns gleich die Besonderheit der Bibliothek. Die über 575.000 Bücher befinden sich in hunderten von Regalen, die über insgesamt sieben Stockwerte verteilt wurden. Das Einzigartige daran ist die Metallkonstruktion, die oftmals den Eindruck erweckt, als würden manche Bereiche in der Luft schweben. Dadurch wirkt die Innenarchitektur des Gebäudes, dessen Bau insgesamt fast 70 Millionen Euro kostete, wahnsinnig futuristisch. Ich kam aus dem Staunen kaum heraus.

In my opinion, you get the best perspective, if you go to the fourth floor in the middle of the hall. Here you are almost exactly in the center of the entire interior. The nice thing about this library is, that the admission is free and you can just take any book off the shelf yourself, make yourself comfortable on one of the numerous sofas and chairs and read for as long as you want. You can also drop off backpacks for free. Even the permission to take pictures with a professional camera is free. All you have to do is fill out a form and show your passport or ID card.

Die beste Perspektive hat man meiner Meinung nach, wenn man sich in der Mitte der Halle in das vierte Stockwerk begibt. Hier befindet man sich fast genau im Mittelpunkt des gesamten Innenraums. Das Schöne an dieser Bibliothek ist, der Eintritt ist kostenlos und man kann sich jedes einzelne Buch einfach selbst aus dem Regal nehmen, es sich auf einem der zahlreichen Sofas und Stühle bequem machen und so lange lesen, wie man möchte. Auch Rucksäcke kann man kostenlos abgeben. Sogar die Genehmigung, mit einer professionellen Kamera zu fotografieren, ist kostenlos. Man muss dafür lediglich ein Formular ausfüllen und seinen Reisepass oder Personalausweis vorzeigen.

I am so glad that I finally had the opportunity to visit the Vasconcelos Library. My expectations were not disappointed. For me, it is one of the most fascinating free attractions in the Mexican capital. I am particularly pleased with how uncomplicated it is to visit the building and use the books. This is anything but a matter of course, especially in Mexico. But even if you are not interested in literature, you should definitely visit this unique building because of its spectacular interior design.

Ich bin so froh, dass ich endlich die Möglichkeit hatte, die Vasconcelos-Bibliothek zu besuchen. Meine Erwartungen wurden nicht enttäuscht. Für mich zählt sie zu den faszinierendsten kostenlosen Sehenswürdigkeiten der mexikanischen Hauptstadt. Besonders erfreulich finde ich, wie unkompliziert sich der Besuch des Gebäudes und die Nutzung der Bücher gestalten. Dies ist besonders für Mexiko alles andere als selbstverständlich. Doch auch, wenn ihr euch nicht für Literatur interessiert, solltet ihr dieses einzigartige Gebäude aufgrund seiner spektakulären Innenarchitektur unbedingt besuchen.
