The beautiful, small, white castle, preached on the shore of the Gulf of Trieste, has an enchanting location and is surrounded by a charming park. It’s location offers a possibility for a nice walk from Trieste city.
Trieste is one of our favourite locations, just across the Slovenian-Italian border, and whenever we have time, we take a short drive to the city for a nice coffee or drink in one of the many bars, for some shopping, or just to walk around the city. This time we've decided to make a pleasant walk from the main beach of Trieste to the Miramare castle.

The walk was all along the seashore, on the side walk, and mainly covered with trees that were offering a pleasant and refreshing shadow. Since it was a hot Saturday, the beach was packed with locals looking for some sunbathing and refreshment in the sea. Also, the side walk was very vivid, with many people walking or jogging.

We also noticed a group of people who were training the dogs to rescue people out of the water.
While taking a look on our right side, we were able to see the interesting and unusual church of The Sanctuary on Monte Grisa.
As we were approaching the castle, the crow was getting bigger, and there were also some organised groups that were heading towards or from the castle. We entered the park by the gate, and slowly we sow the beautiful castle right in front of us. The day was almost without a cloud, the sky was intense blue, the perfect background for the white castle.
The castle was built between 1856 and 1860 as the residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria (later Emperor of Mexico) and his wife Carlotta of Belgium. The construction of the castle was a revisited mediaeval fortress with a Romantic taste.

Our original plan was to visit the inside of the castle, but we realised that there was quite a long queue, and we decided to leave the internal visit for the next time.
I was told that the interior is pretty nice. The castle is made up of over 20 rooms: particularly valuable are Maximilian's rooms. Since 1955, the castle has been a state museum.
Instead of visiting the castle inside, we walked around the beautiful garden, which, at the time of construction, was planned to be a Mediterranean garden, with orange and lemon trees, but unfortunately, the trees did not survive the severity of the first winter. After that, the garden was transformed into a landscape garden, with some woodland areas and a parterre.

The park has many statues and other elements of decoration, which are a feast for the eyes for art lovers.

There are also other buildings, beside the castle and inside the park, and the most interesting for me was the Castelletto, a small-scale reproduction of the main building.

On the way back, the city beach also came to life. It was full of people soaking up the sun and seeking refreshment in the sea.
After all this walking, it was time for gelato (ice cream), and slowly we walked back to the starting point. But of course, we couldn’t make it with a sip of great aperitivo, the Aperol Spritz. With all this walking, we were pretty hungry as well, and we stopped for a nice burger (this time not for a typical Italian dish), but I was so hungry that I forgot to make a picture, but my wife managed to make a quick photo of her tacos. A great meal after a great walk was just what we needed.
