As hidden as its name, this body of water has been the subject of political diatribes, negotiations and environmental claims in recent years, because despite being a common good, a wealthy British businessman (Joe Lewis) has appropriated it with legal elements and prevents access to tourists, environmentalists and others who wish to contemplate this wonder of nature.
He has even built a dam that generates power for all his business needs without respecting the care for the environment that the region deserves.
Apart from these inconveniences, we also managed to hide in some of the natural surroundings of the park and the lake and take some beautiful pictures.
In other cases we had to content ourselves with photographing the lake from the viewpoint on the roadside.
This is the fourth lake we have seen on this marvellous route of the Route of the 7 Lakes, and during the whole journey on this route with a marvellous panoramic view we find a landscape covered by the Andean Patagonian forest, whose main exponents are the lengas, coihues, radales, cypresses and pines of all kinds, raulies, ñires and pellín oaks, all species of the native flora of this zone.
Each stop, whether it has a viewpoint or not, is a temptation to stay as long as possible in the midst of the colours and the aroma of the forest that penetrates our lungs, the silence where we only feel the murmur of the treetops, the stillness of the landscape that blends with the serenity of the lake waters and the landscape, not us tourists, who become the only, main and fundamental protagonist of this true work of art put into action by nature.
In the tourist office of Villa La Angostura they gave us, so that we could orientate ourselves without difficulty, the map shown in the image with the arrow where Lago Escondido is located. And they kindly gave us all the necessary indications. Our thanks to all the staff.
The Lago Escondido extends, crossing the Andes Mountains, to Chile, in the Valdivian forest area, where it is born, more precisely in the basin of the Puelo River, which in turn flows into the Pacific Ocean, crossing the trans-Andean country in its entire width (we have to take into account that Chile is a very narrow country and the distance between the mountains and the sea is minimal). It is not very wide and in the distance we can see the mouth of the river in the shape of a skull between two mountains. If we wanted to, we could rent a boat and go as far as the maritime border with Chile. There are several glacial lakes in this area which have a similar origin.
According to what we could find out, the controversies about the ownership of the lake go back to more than half a century ago when Arsoindo Montero, María Ortiz and their children arrived from the Chilean side to dedicate themselves to sheep breeding (the main livestock resource of the Andean region), occupied the Chilean shores of the lake and obtained the property by usucapion over the years, passing it on to their heirs who sold the property to Joe Lewis, a British businessman with interests in Chile.
In 2000, Argentina passed a law proclaiming the lake on the Argentinean side as a public good and its access for tourism and knowledge purposes. In the meantime, Joe Lewis and the descendants of the heirs of the Montero family established themselves in the area and began to develop their commercial activities by fencing off the entire property and placing guards to prevent access.
The only way for tourists to access the Argentinean shore would be to open a new road through the mountain by expropriating properties and fields, which would be too burdensome and would create not only an economic but also a political problem. In the meantime, environmental protests continue.
Tan escondido como su nombre este espejo de agua ha sido en los últimos años moitvo de diatribas políticas, negociados y reclamos ambientalistas ya que a pesar de ser un bien de uso común, un rico empresario britónico (Joe Lewis) se ha apropiado del mismo con elementos legales e impide el acceso a turistas, amientalistas y demás personas que dessen contemplar esta maravilla de la naturaleza.
Incluso ha constrído un dique que genera potencia para todas sus necesidades empresariales sin respetar el cuidado del medio ambiente que la región merece.
Aparte de estos inconvenientes logramos, también nosotros, escondernos en algunos reductos del entorno natural que rodea al parque y al lago y sacar algunas bellísimas fotos.
En otros casos tuvimos que acontentarnos con fotografiar el lago desde el mirador situado a orillas de la carretera.
En este maravilloso recorrido de la Ruta de los 7 Lagos es el cuarto lago que avistamos y durante todo el recorrido en esta ruta con una vista panorámica maravilloso encontramos un paisaje constelado y tapizado por ejemplares del bosque andino patagónico, entre cuyos principales exponentes están la lengas, coihues, radales, cipreses y pinos de todo tipo, raulies, ñires y robles pellín, todas especies de la flora nativa de esta zona.
Cada parada tenga mirador o no es una tentación para quedarnos el mayor tiempo posible en medio de los colores y el aroma del bosque que nos penetra en los pulmones, el silencio donde solo se siente el rumor de las copas de los árboles, la quietud del paisaje que se confunde con la serenidad de las aguas de lago y el paisaje, no nosotros turistas, que pasa a ser el único, principal y fundamental protagonista de esta verdadera obra de arte puesta en acción por la naturaleza.
En la oficina de turismo de Villa La Angostura nos regalaron, para que pudi0ramos orientarnos sin dificultad, el mapa que mostramos en la imagen con la flecha donde está ubicado el Lago Escondido. Y nos brindaron amablemente todas las indicaciones necesarias. A todo el personal nuestro agredecimiento.
El Lago Escondido se extiende, atravesando la Cordillera de los Andes, hasta Chile, en la zona del bosque valdiviano, donde nace, más precisamente en la cuenca del río Puelo que a su vez desembova en el Océano Pacífico atravesando el país trasandino a todo lo ancho (tengamos en cuenta que Chile es un país muy angosto y la distancia entre la cordillera y el mar es mínima). No es muy ancho y a lo lejos vemos la desembocadira a forma de cúneo entre dos montañas. Si quisiéramos podríamos alquilar un bote y llegar hasta la frontera marítima que limita con Chile. Hay varios lagos glaciares en este zona que tienen un origen similar.
Segúnb pudimos averiguar las controversias sobre la propiedad del lago vienen de hace más de medio siglo cuando llegaron -de la parte chilena- Arsoindo Montero, María Ortiz y sus hijos para dedicarse a la cría de ovejas (el principal recurso ganadero de la región andina), ocuparon las riberas chilenas del lago y obtuvieron la propiedad por usucapion con el correr de los años, pasando luego a sus herederos que venden la propiedad a Joe Lewis empresario británico con intereses en Chile.
En el 2000 Argentina dicta una ley que proclama la condición de bien público del lago del lado argentino y su acceso con fines turísticos y de conocimiento. Mientras tanto Joe Lewis y los descendientes de los herederos de la familia Montero se establecen en el lugar y comienzan a desarrollar sus actividades comerciales cercando toda la propiedad y poniendo guardias para impedir el acceso.
La única manera de acceder los turistas sobre la ribera argentina sería abrir una nueva carretera a través de la montaña expropiando propiedades y campos lo que resultaría demasiado gravoso y generariía un problema no solo económico sino también político. Mientras tanto las protestas ambientalistas continúan.
