When I started traveling with my friend a few years ago, the types of accommodations we liked the most were hostels. In this type of place everything is shared: the kitchen, the rooms, the living room, even the bathrooms. This modality, besides being the most economical for a single person or two, has the advantage of allowing you to meet a lot of people along the way. There are those who prefer to have their privacy when traveling, but for me it worked quite well. At the time I had no idea that three years later I would choose to work in exchange for accommodation in these places to extend my stay in differents parts of my country Argentina, but the good thing is that I already knew how it all worked 😅.
Cuando empecé a viajar con mi amiga hace unos años, los tipos de alojamientos que más nos gustaban eran los hostels. En este tipo de lugares todo es compartido: la cocina, las habitaciones, la sala de estar, incluso los baños. Esta modalidad, además de ser la más económica para cuando se es una sola persona o dos, tiene la ventaja de que te permite conocer a un montón de personas en el camino. Hay quienes prefieren tener su privacidad cuando están de viaje, pero para mí funcionó bastante bien. En ese momento no tenía idea que tres años después elegiría trabajar a cambio de alojamiento en estos lugares para prolongar mi estadía en diferentes partes de mi país Argentina, pero lo bueno es que ya sabía cómo funcionaba todo 😅.
To date, I have worked in 6 different establishments. Although they were all more or less the same, in each one I had to adapt a little bit to the environment. One of the things that matters most to me when I am looking for a volunteer position is where I am going to sleep. Sometimes I had to share a room with guests with a lot of change, which prevented me from being completely comfortable being with strangers almost every day. Luckily, most of the time there is a room set aside specifically for volunteers, which makes it a little more personal because these are people who also have long stays. I have never had a room to myself yet, but I have never had a bad time in any of my previous experiences 😃.
Al día de la fecha, ya me tocó trabajar en 6 establecimientos diferentes. Si bien todos eran más o menos iguales, en cada uno tocó adaptarse un poco al entorno. Una de las cosas que más me importa al momento de buscar un voluntariado es en dónde voy a dormir. Algunas veces me ha tocado compartir habitación con huéspedes con bastante recambio, lo que impedía generar una total comodidad al estar con extraños casi todos los días. Por suerte, la mayoría de las veces hay un cuarto destinado específicamente para los voluntarios, lo que lo hace un poco más personal porque estas son personas que también tienen estadía larga. Todavía nunca me tocó una habitación para mí sola, pero en ninguna de las experiencias anteriores la pasé mal 😃.
As for sharing the kitchen, people in hostels are usually very respectful of other people's things. When it comes to keeping something in the fridge, everyone labels their own things and no one touches what is not theirs. The same when it comes to using the facilities: every time someone is cooking, they wash everything they use to leave it clean for whoever comes after them. This spirit of respect was present everywhere I went, so I never had any problems of coexistence 😃.
En cuanto a compartir la cocina, la gente de los hostels suele ser muy respetuosa con las cosas ajenas. Cuando se trata de guardar algo en la heladera, cada uno etiqueta sus cosas y nadie toca lo que no es suyo. Lo mismo a la hora de usar las instalaciones: cada vez que alguien está cocinando, lava todo lo que usa para dejarlo limpio al que venga detrás. Este espíritu de respeto estuvo presente en todos los lugares que estuve, así que nunca tuve problemas de convivencia 😃.
Regarding the use of the bathrooms, most of these places have bathrooms for men and women, with plenty of space to change and bathe comfortably. In high demand seasons, it is almost obligatory to bathe a bit quickly because there are more people waiting to use the restrooms. I almost never had a problem with this because I chose to bathe very late at night, when most people were already asleep. In more than six months working and living in these places, I don't remember having to wait long to use the bathroom despite being in hostels with more than 40 beds 😃.
Respecto al uso de los baños, en la mayoría de estos lugares hay baños para hombres y mujeres, con bastante espacio para cambiarse y bañarse cómodamente. En temporadas de alta demanda, es casi obligatorio bañarse un poco rápido porque hay más gente esperando usar los baños. Yo casi nunca tenía problemas con esto porque elegía bañarme muy tarde en la noche, cuando ya casi todos dormían. En más de seis meses seguidos trabajando y viviendo en estos lugares, no recuerdo haber tenido que esperar mucho para usar el baño a pesar de estar en hosteles de más de 40 plazas 😃.
All these issues of sharing everything, all the time may be easy for those who only spend a few days in the hostel, but you have to think a little more orderly when your idea is to stay at least a month. You definitely have to like this idea to have a good time, otherwise it can be tedious if you are a person who enjoys silence. Living in this kind of places almost forces you to be sociable, because otherwise these places are not for you. Anyway, some hostels have private rooms with private bathrooms, which makes them almost like a hotel but with the added bonus of having a kitchen at your disposal 😃.
Todas estas cuestiones de compartir todo, todo el tiempo pueden ser fáciles para aquellos que solo pasan unos pocos días en el hostel, pero hay que mentalizarse un poco más ordenadamente cuando tu idea es quedarte al menos un mes. Definitivamente te tiene que gustar esta idea para pasarla bien, porque sino puede ser tedioso si sos una persona que disfruta el silencio. Habitar en este tipo de lugares casi que te obliga a ser sociable, porque de lo contrario estos lugares no son para vos. De todos modos, algunos hostels cuentan con habitaciones privadas con baño privado, lo que los transforman casi en un hotel pero con el plus de tener una cocina a disposición 😃.
I think that at this point in my life, I am enjoying this experience. In all these months I was able to save a lot of money just by working a few hours a day in exchange for accommodation, at the same time I met a lot of great people. Having the opportunity to form small monthly contracts in different places in Argentina is great, and even more when I have Hive as financial support to complete the adventure. For now my idea is to do this for a while longer, because there are a lot of other places I want to meet: my list may seem a bit long, but I know it's not impossible 💕.
Creo que en este momento de mi vida, esta experiencia me está gustando. En todos estos meses pude ahorrar bastante dinero solo por trabajar algunas horas por día a cambio del alojamiento, al mismo tiempo que conocí a muchas personas geniales. Tener la oportunidad de formar pequeños contratos mensuales en distintos lugares de Argentina es genial, y más aún cuando tengo a Hive como apoyo financiero para terminar de completar la aventura. Por ahora mi idea es hacer esto durante un tiempo más, porque hay un montón de otros lugares que quiero conocer: mi lista puede parecer un poco larga, pero sé que no es imposible 💕.
