School Begins

The sound of the school bell rang through the streets, as Garrick and his daughter approached the building, surrounded by the crowds of other parents and children. With her hand in his, they made their way to the front gate, where Garrick knelt down to give his daughter a hug.

“Look over there, there’s Samuel!” Garrick waved over to a father and his son, pointing them out to his daughter. “You and Sam can head in together, ok honey?”

Garrick’s daughter nodded, swaying side to side.

“Hello Mr. Rhys! And how are you, Cariad?” Samuel’s father ushered his son over with his hands on his shoulders.

     “Hi there, Rhodri,” responded Garrick.

“I’m good thank you, Uncle Rhodri,” Cariad waved to Rhodri and Samuel, her smile warm as the morning sun.

“You ready for your first day? I’m sure your dad has sorted you right out for the best start to school,” Rhodri pressed Samuel forward, closing the gap between him and Cariad.

“That we have, Rhod, she’s got her pencil case, an apple, and a hunger for knowledge!” Garrick ruffled Cariad’s hair.

Rhodri laughed, “That’s good to hear. Right then you two, you better get going. The teacher’s over there waiting for you both.” Rhodri waved at the teacher, a Mrs. Llwyd, the adults’ own primary school teacher some thirty years ago.

Mrs. Llwyd beckoned them over, and Garrick planted a kiss on his daughter’s head. Samuel began crying, but a tug at his hand by Cariad stifled the upset. Garrick prodded Rhodri with an elbow, gawping at the spectacle. The two then made their way to the school gate, for their first foray into independence.
