Newbies Tutorial: Hive Security

bruno-kema.png

Hello everyone, how are you all doing today? It is a marvelous day indeed and I am looking forward to all that can be achieved.

My post today will be on the next topic for the Newbies Initiative Program where I will be talking about HIVE SECURITY.

As we all know, Hive is a lot of things to all of us. It is not just a platform for making posts, it is a means of livelihood for some people, seeing the amount of income that can be generated from it. And to that effect, it has to be made as secure as possible so that everyone that operates on the platform can do so with absolute peace of mind.

In this post, we will be discussing two sub-topics:

1. HIVE KEYS
2. ACCOUNT RECOVERY

Now let us get to it....

HIVE KEYS

Your Hive account is basically under lock for protection, and you are the only one given access to it. And the only way you can access your account and make use of it is with your keys. These are different from passwords because they are more complex and are difficult to keep to memory. This way, it makes it harder to hack into an account.

There are four types of keys presently on Hive and they have different uses in the blockchain. I will list them below:

MEMO KEY: This is the least powerful key on the blockchain and it is also the least used. It can be used to send and view private messages.

POSTING KEY: This is required for making posts and comments on the blockchain. And also you need the key to follow accounts, upvote and reblog posts, and even mute accounts.

ACTIVE KEY: This particular key has even more uses. It can be used for Hive Power up or down. Also, it can be used for HBD conversions, voting for witnesses, etc.

OWNER KEY: This is the most powerful key on the blockchain and the one that should be guarded most judiciously. It can be used to reset all other keys, and even recover your account. It can also be used to create another masker key in the event that it gets lost.

MASTER KEY: This is the one key that can be used in the event that you would need to recover all your passwords after loosing them for one reason or the other. It is this key that will be required of you. In the picture below, the Master key is the password written at the top of the page. You will find this in the file containing your hive keys which was sent to you when you first opened an account on Hive.

So, now that we have covered all the keys, how do we find them in the blockchain?

STEPS

1. When you open up your blog, click on “WALLET”.

2. Next, you click on “Keys and Permissions”. And that takes you to your keys. Don’t forget to keep them safe.

And now that we are done with keys, let us move on to the next sub–topic.

ACCOUNT RECOVERY

In the event that your account has been lost, like if you got hacked, there are measures that have been put in place to ensure that your account can be recovered. All these can be done provided you follow the required steps. And I will teach you how.

First of all, I need to tell you what a Trustee is. A Trustee is an account that has been attached to yours, so that in the event of you losing your account the Trustee will be used to help you recover it. It is also called a Recovery Account. And you can find out yours at https://hiveblocks.com/@username. You will find out how to recover your account in the following steps.

STEPS

1.Go to this link https://reazuliqbal.com/HiveAccountRecovery/

2.Click on “Recover Account”.

3.Follow the instructions as detailed there. You must first of all generate a new password so you can be given a new Public Owner Key.

4.Send the Public Owner Key to the Trustee.
5.At the final step, put in the required details and click on “Recover Account”.

So friends, this is basically all that we need to know when it comes to Hive security. It is not enough to know these steps though. You have to make sure you keep your keys perfectly safe, in a place you can easily get to them in the event of anything. And also, avoid clicking on phishing links are these are what hackers use to get into accounts.

QUESTIONS AND TASK TO BE GIVEN ON THIS TUTORIAL

And that wraps it up for today’s tutorial, read through it carefully and if you have any questions, it will be treated on the Smile Discord Server on Sunday the 17th of April by 6PM GMT. And after that the next task will be given. Do well to ask your questions during the meeting.

Thank you all for reading...
