Roaming For Roasts : Charms of Cafe Milieu, a Minimalistic Haven in The Suburb Of Bangkok

Bangkok's Best Kept Secret!

DSC02543.jpg

It was around 11 AM when one of my friends texted me and I was still half awake. Apparently he sent me a cafe address and mentioned that it’s properly air-conditioned, with plugs and “ they have nice coworking”. Reading that, I was motivated to jump start my day and plan to meet up with my friend over the cafe he suggested.

It has been a while since I last visited a nice cafe to sit down, do some work, while enjoying coffee. That is why, knowing that there is a proper place to do that, I didn’t waste any opportunity. I got dressed up and got ready for the day.

On my way there, I was honestly a little bit sceptical. The neighbourhood isn’t exactly a posh one as you would see many old buildings with worn out paint surrounded by skyscrapers and smaller sized condominiums. It was also a rather densely populated area where the traffic and motorbike was slightly lawless - they could cross whenever. And for some reason, the area reminded me of Chinatown in Indonesia.

After only a 10 minutes ride from the main busy road, I was taken to an even smaller alley which even makes me doubtful. “ Was my friend pranking me?”

Then I spotted a very distinct building compared to its surroundings. The main entrance was decorated like a cute french styled cafe. It has the name cafe milieu plastered on its glass wall. Once you step inside, you will forget all about the busy road or the chaotic twisted electric lines. You’ll be transformed to another universe like I felt when I was there.

When I walked up to the register, the lady started talking in Thai to me. It was until I said sorry and she switched to English. It seems that the place is family-run and they are very lovely and friendly people.

“ Can I take pictures around?” I asked their permission and they were happily allowing me to. So, I took some more pictures then scanned through the menu. They sell various options for brunch and sourdough. It was what I would call a westernised cafe. Their coffee is also varied with drip coffee available at the place and if you don’t drink coffee, you can pick the non-coffee options that are quite varied.

After paying for everything, I was checking out their display in which they sell various tea sets that are super cute. If only I was a local, I’d be tempted to buy them. Then they told me that they have more space on the second floor.

“ Thank you, my friend is already upstairs” I told them politely and went upstairs while my friend was working. He chose a seat that was in front of the window and facing a building with the old-worn out painting and the twisted wires. And when you look inward, it was certainly another universe. But after all, the ambience and atmosphere was really unique.

The Coffee (Es Yen) and The Food ( Milieu Brunch)

After waiting for only twenty minutes, my order came. I got myself Es Yen which is Thai-style coffee. When that order came, it looked like a regular cappuccino but it’s apparently not. It’s even similar to Vietnamese coffee as Es Yen uses condensed milk. My ice coffee came in a cute coaster and since I happened to sit next to an aesthetic set up, I got the perfect click for it. The coffee tastes refreshing and as well as sweet, just like a regular coffee would. But obviously, now that place got me curious about Es Yen, the thai styled coffee.

To accompany my coffee, I ordered their brunch menu which came with ham, sourdough, salad, and a small cute bowl of yoghurt with muesli as the topping.

The meal itself reminds me of Bali and it has a tropical vibe to it and something I wasn’t expecting from a small cafe in such a neighbourhood. So, I was really happy knowing that they take great care of their food and presentation. It was definitely worth every penny.

As for dessert, I got two madeleine cakes. I was even surprised when the lady offered to reheat it and eventually the cake came with raspberry and was well-decorated despite I got it from their snack table. I was really happy that not only was the service great, the food was amazing too.

I honestly want to keep this hidden just like it’s literal location but I want they do well too! So, next time if you’re in BKK, don’t forget to check out this cute little cafe. The place is accessible by MRT but you can also use grab or local transportation to reach this cute cafe.
