The First Culling!

A nice batch of rain followed by a healthy dose of sun has meant that our fledgling veggie garden has taken off quickly even though we were away for a week! I was a bit worried that the the heat of the Sun would be too much for the young newly planted veggies... even if they got a good dose or rain, the Australian Sun is pretty damn harsh! The spinach and chard are growing well, and will soon be ready for harvesting in little batches.

Unfortunately, not everything is growing well.. the eggplants are lagging behind everything else. They aren't really supposed to be a spring sort of plant, more a summer one... so, hopefully they will start recovering a bit in the warmer months. I have snipped off some of the dying leaves to hopefully give it a bit more a focused growth. Meanwhile, the sage and leeks are doing well enough in this bucket.

The lettuce is definitely ready in parts to start a little bit of a harvest... and in fact, in the few days after I took this photo, they suddenly had a huge growth spurt which mean that we culled them a bit for a nice feed (see down later!)

And my mother is in town, and itching to get some stuff done in the garden... honestly, it is sort of hard to find jobs that will suit her age and that will be enough to keep her occupied! But she ended up staking the fruit trees that we had planted and hadn't gotten around to staking. Thank goodness, my wife was going to do them... but with the both of us being snowed under with work... well, it would be a couple of months before that happened!

... and her we go, hamburgers (and a chicken corn soup) were the first meal with our new harvest! Nice and tasty... definitely more bite than the stuff that you get at the supermarket. I think I will put in a request for rocket in the next batch of growing... I had had some home grown rocket in the past... and wow, they have some serious kick!
