My digital archive has very few photographs of bookstores. This is the thing I do not shoot at all, and it was not easy for me to find the pictures for this post. Actually it took a lot of digging!.. I spent a few days remembering which folders may contain #streetphoto of bookstores...
Of course, I love reading paper books! Like everyone else, in recent years I have been reading a lot of electronic publications. But that's not the point, it's that when I liked to visit bookstores, I was young, poor and didn't have a digital camera. Now I have a camera and an arsenal of lenses...but I don't go to bookstores! well, it happens sometimes.. very rarely, not more than once a year. Yes, I'm ashamed, but I made this confession. Relief!
Я обожаю чтение и не могу спокойно пройти мимо человека, уткнувшегося в книгу, и не сфотографировать его :) Но снимков с книжными магазинами в моем архиве, как ни странно, нет: это не тот предмет, который я люблю снимать. Я потратил несколько часов, вспоминая в каких папках у меня могли заваляться книжные прилавки...
Как и все мы, в последние годы я читаю много книг в электронном виде. Но я любил посещать книжные магазины когда я был молод, беден, и тогда у меня не было цифровой камеры. Теперь у меня есть камера и целый арсенал объективов, но я не посещаю книжные магазины! иногда cлучается.. но редко, буквально раз в год. Да, мне стыдно, но я сделал это признание. Теперь мне легче!
A second-hand bookseller is setting up his makeshift stall. In the early 90s, scenes like this were a permanent streetscape, especially within the metro stations entrances, but nowadays it's a rare, exceptional, disappearing sight. (An endangered specie, maybe?) But, of course, you can often see such sellers (and carefully examine their books) at a flee-market where people sell their things.
Букинист-продавец подержанной книги раскладывает свой временный прилавок. В начале 90-х годов это была обязательная картина уличного пейзажа, особенно возле станций метро .. а теперь - редкое, исключительное зрелище. Но, конечно, таких продавцов часто можно увидеть (и внимательно изучить их товар) на толкучем рынке, где люди продают свои вещи.
The fact is that when I got married, our libraries have merged, and soon there became no room for the new books. Sad, but true. This is another reason why I don't visit bookstores, and try to limit myself at buying paper books. It forced my love for ebooks. But that was a side note.

Дело в том, что когда я женился, наши с женой библиотеки объединились, и в нашей комнате не осталось места для новых книг. Это еще одна веская причина, почему я не посещаю книжные магазины, и стараюсь ограничивать себя в покупке бумажных книг, моя любовь к электронных изданиям - вынужденная и носит ограниченный утилитарный характер. Но это так, замечание в сторону.
"Annekirche" is a very interesting place I want to tell the full story one day, but I still need to edit the photos properly (and thats a pretty hard task, as you can see!). It is an old church founded back in 1704 - thus, it is the same age as the city of St.Petersburg itself. It was burned down and was not restored as a temple. Now its walls house an art space... and the nice bookstore of spiritual literature, as well !
Интересное место; я все еще собираюсь отредактировать фотографии, чтобы рассказать про него подробнее. "Аннекирхе" - это старинная церковь времен основания города, она сгорела и не была восстановлена как храм. Сейчас ее стены скрывают арт-пространство... а также магазин духовной литературы!

There are three libraries in my neighborhood (one of them is for children). The second one in the photo above has a glass wall - good for photography! The third library is not that photo-friendly, anyway, looking from the outside you would not guess that this is a book depository. Meet the Russian National Library (RNL).
This is one of the two largest libraries in Russia (the second one is located in Moscow). Founded back in 1795 by Empress Catherine II, until 1917 it was called the Imperial Public Library. Why does the building in the photo look so modern then? Well, it's just one of the new buildings. The very first, historic one is located at a different address.
По соседству со мной расположены три библиотеки (одна из них детская). Вторая на фото овыше: она имеет стеклянную стену - хорошо для фотографирования! Третья библиотека не настолько фото-френдли, во всяком случае, глядя снаружи вы не догадаетесь что это книго-хранилище. Знакомьтесь: Российская Национальная библиотека (РНБ).
Это одна из двух крупнейших библиотек России (вторая находится в Москве). Она была основана в 1795 году императрицей Екатериной II, и до 1917 года носила название Импера́торской публи́чной библиотеки. Почему здание на фото выглядит так современно? Ха, просто это один из новых корпусов. Самое первое, историческое здание находится по другому адресу...

In general, you never know in advance where you happen to meet an interesting book. All sorts of specialized events: exhibitions, museums, art galleries - can suddenly surprise you with amazing first-grade publications, whose existence you did not even suspect.
Вообще, никогда не знаешь заранее, где встретишь интересную книгу. Всякие специализированные мероприятия - выставки, музеи_ арт-галереи - могут внезапно осюрпризить первоклассными изданиями, о чьем существовании ты даже и не подозревал.
In the photo above: unique and very interesting publishing house "Red Sailor". Owner, editor-in-chief and publisher all rolled into one, basically the boss - sells his books off the stall. I took this photo at the art space (museum) of St.Petersburg artists 'MITKI'. NB: if you ever visit the city, be sure to check out this museum too! It is amazing. As for these books... EACH will require a separate post, so I just cant start :P

Фотография сделана в арт-пространстве (музее) санкт-питербургских художников МИТЬКИ. НБ: если вы когда-нибудь посетите город, обязательно проверьте и этот музей тоже!

... and at the same time enjoyed the cozy art atmosphere, boxes of vinyl records (!) and luxurious bookshelves with splendid fine art albums and specialized literature. Yes, this is a new type of bookstore that we were missing back in the 1990s.
...а заодно насладился уютной арт-атмосферой, виниловыми пластинками (!) и роскошными книжными полками с художественными альбомами и изданиями по искусству. Да, это книжный магазин нового типа, каких у нас не было в 1990-е годы.
I'd be a liar if I said I didn't leave empty-handed... I didn't buy a single book that day. But if I could, I would take with me this critical biography of Marcel Duchamp - the famous DaDa artist, anfan terrible, provocateur and, in general, a remarkable person. I am a big fan of DaDa, you know.
Я совру, если скажу что ушел не с пустыми руками. В тот день я не купил ни одной книги. Но если бы мог, унес бы с собой вот эту критическую биографию Марселя Дюшана - известного мастера ДаДа и вообще человека, замечательного во многих отношениях.

The last but not the least! Another place to find books is... my office, of course! See, I work at a large book publishing house and we have the same problem here: we always run out of space to store our new editions :))) It is a great pleasure to lend any book you like and read it without having to buy and store at home: a triple profit!
И последнее.... но не в последнюю очередь! Еще одно место, где можно найти книги - конечно же, в офисе! Я работаю в крупном книжном издательстве, и мы здесь имеем ту же проблему -- всё время кончается место для хранения наших книг :))) Я с большим удовольствием читаю книги в процессе их подготовки, с экрана, а также беру напрокат готовые томики, без того чтобы покупать и хранить их дома: тройной профит!
By the way, many people have the same problems... and it happens that they solve them in a slightly sad way: they throw them away... or GIVE IT FOR FREE! Some of the books in my library were obtained in this way. A few years ago we were given a whole bag of children's books (children grow out of books too...).
Кстати, те же проблемы есть у многих людей... и случается, что они их решают их немного печальным образом: выкидывают... или ОТДАЮТ ДАРОМ! Некоторая часть книг в моей библиотеке были получены именно таким образом. Несколько лет назад нам отдали целый мешок детских книг (дети вырастают и из книг тоже...).
Residents of the city arrange the books giveaway in different ways: through 'craig lists', social networks, personal connections, and simply by leaving them in special places, such as libraries. Also, there exist special cabinets or shelves on the streets of the city for 'books chain free give-away' (cant share a photo here, cause I simply dont have one!).
Жители города устраивают раздачу книг разными способами: через крейг-листы, социальные сети, личные связи, а также - просто оставляя в специальных местах, например библиотеках. На улицах города существуют специальные шкафы или полки для раздачи книг даром (но здесь не могу показать фотографию, просто потому что у меня нет ни одной).
And these two books I received from my friend @tatdt, who run a free books giveaway a while ago, trying to make some room for her living). Erich Remarque novels is my weak point, I just could not let this book go to the trash and saved it. Pics were taken especially for this post.
А эти две книги в моей библиотеке я получил от моего друга @tatdt, которая именно отдавала даром книги, освобождая своё жизненное пространство. Романы Ремарка - моя слабость, я просто не мог позволить этой книге отправиться на помойку и спас ее. Сфотографировано специально для данного поста.
