Splinterlands - Brief Overview of Events AKA - Tournaments

Beyond rank battles there are also events players can participate and top performers earn prizes within an event. Within events there are currently three formats events are setup in.

  • Single Elimination - AKA Normal Event
  • Any Time Event
  • Sit and Go Event

Normal Event

I give it a title of normal because nothing special about it. When looking for such an event it will list out under "WHEN" the date and time. Players must arrive 15 minutes before the even begins and enter arena to confirm they are active and ready to participate. Once player confirms they are ready to battle the matches will be selected randomly among the participants and in these events it is often knock out rounds or best out of three rounds. In any event if a player missed the confirmation to enter arena they are automatically out of the event even if there are on time.

Any Time Event

When events first started they were all under the normal event category. This meant participants had to be in front of their screen at exactly the schedule time in order to partake in the event. If they they were out of the running. As time pass and complaints of not being able to always play at a specific time for an event the creation of Any Time Event was formed.

In Any Time Event players again need to sign up 15 minutes before the schedule date as they are confirmed ready to battle. Once the event begins players will be required to setup their battle formations within a given time limit. The time limit typically is set for 24 hours per a round. In this regards each round a player successful wins they move on the following day to again setup formations within 24 hour period. The event can be several rounds so the outcome will take days.

With this type of event players from all time zone would have the convenience to fit in their schedule when they wish to setup their matches within a day. Again drawback is that the event drags on for days unlike normal event.

Sit and Go Event

A mix between the Normal and Anytime events is Sit and Go. This is where players sign up for a schedule time to battle and must be active at schedule time. There they will face off against other opponents immediately after all players have confirmed their participation in the event. The matches will go one after another until top players who survive wins the rewards.

The major difference between Sit and Go versus Normal is that players will immediately be in matches once participation is filled. While in normal is the tournament will always start at the schedule time even if player may have signed up and paid their DEC to participate but forgot the event and/or forgot to click confirmation 15 minutes before the event. This is why the term Sit and Go was coined. Players who enter the event first will have to wait until all spots in event is filled and then the matches will automatically begin. Without the accepted amount of participants the event will not begin. Therefore players who first signed up are sitting and waiting for more competitors.

Rules

Another important parameter to understand in events are the rules. Within rules there are three factors to consider if a player wants to participate with the cards they have in their collection. The three factors are:

  1. Event League
  2. Regular and/or Gold Cards
  3. Edition of Cards

Its pretty straight forward with these factors. Lets take a example event:

image.png

In the event listed above all participants are limited to the use of Silver League card levels. In addition only Alpha Gold Foil cards are allow to use in battle. In other cases it could be only Untamed cards are allowed and so forth. With these factors set in place for each event it provides players an idea of what they can potentially do well in while others they may not want to partake due to lack of enough cards to fit the event's factors.

Other Parameters in Events To Know

Events mostly all require DEC entrance fee. For almost a year events that are within a player's ranked league they pay very little DEC entrance fee, 1 - 10 DEC is the typical. If the player wants to participate in an event that has a different league from their current ranked league the DEC entrance fee is often a lot higher, from 100 - 2500 DEC, just to pay entrance fee. This setup is to mitigate skilled players with max level decks enter in low rank events and easily snatch other people's chances of competing. Instead by making people pay more to enter the event they typically decline since the top winners would only get a fraction of what they put in for entrance fee.

There are from time to time events where entry fee is a different token than DEC. For instance Dcity which is a different Hive blockchain game has a weekly Splinterlands event. In order to participate in their event players are require to pay a token that is specifically earn/created in Dcity. Players either buy the token in open market or have to play Dcity to earn it.

Finally there are public events and private events. The difference is in private events players need password to enter. The password is created by the person who setup the event. So they will distribute the password to players they choose to allow to participate in the private event. For most events are public as listed in the event menu and do not require password to enter.

Conclusions

Hopefully this short post was sufficient for new comers and people unfamiliar with events/tournaments is helpful. I hope to see you guys in some of the events I participate in.

Above is the most recent chart listing the past two weeks tournaments participation and its not as active as one hopes. The players who are willing to participate in the tournament is a lot more than the amount of players who actually check in! Reminder only players who check in 15 minutes before the even has a chance to participate. If they forget to check-in its considered a forfeit from the tournament.

As the game progresses and developers focus on improving the events one goal they should have is to increase participation. I have seen events that have lack of participants in the end having to cancel and refund players of their DEC entrance fee. Hopefully with popularity of the game soaring so will participation in events.
