#needlework :: Reversible alterations

2.jpg

The boys are growing up fast and although the year has started, there is no direction yet on when physical school would start. It is still very much online classes but the parents bought new pair of pants for them.

As the elder boy is reaching his teen years soon, they bought a bigger sized pants in anticipation of sudden growth. But for now, the pants are way to baggy for him still and they require alterations, except the alterations need to be reversible when the time comes, i.e. stitches can easily be removed.

Every part of the pants needed to be altered smaller, the waist, the length and width of the legs. The length needed to be shortened by 8 inches, the waist, 3 inches smaller and the width of the legs, about an inch smaller.

I started with the easiest part of the alteration, the length by first folding them in twice and pin them all around.

... and slowly stitched them by hand using a invisible stitch (or as invisible as I possibly could). At certain parts, the fabric needed to be folded a little because the width at the end of the legs is slightly shorter than the parts above.

After some time, the result of it was quite gratifying.

Next, I tackled the waistline. The waist had a stabilizer all around and it made it hard to fold. But with a bit of patience and controlled strength, it folded and I sewed all around the folds. This part was tricky because the material was quite thick and hard. And to balance both sides, the folds needed to be done on both sides.

The folds had to be pressed down neatly before the stitching begin.

Once done, they didn't look too bad. But I did do quite a number of iterations here because boys being boys, the stitches might just come off with a hard yank.

For the width of the legs, I machine sewed all across the inner legs by an inch or so.

The end result, not too bad I thought :) Now, I only hope the stitches last for a bit until the boy shoots up.

It has been a while since I last posted a needlework project and my first post this year is not that exciting but meaningful because I managed to do this for my nephew. It was quite a challenge too, to work on the alterations with minimal disruption. When the boy shoots up, they will just need to remove the stitches and hopefully the pants will be just nice for him.

I hope to be back more. Looking for my muse :)
