Nina Simone llegó a afirmar que, de no haber tenido un piano que la salvase, "hubiera sido una asesina, dispuesta a devolver golpe por golpe".
El nombre que reposa en mi acta de nacimiento es Eunice Kathleen Waymon, nací en Carolina del norte, en el año 1933. Mi padre, John Divine Waymon, fue un verdadero artista; pero sus sueños como bailarín, cantante y actor se desvanecieron para encargarse de una familia numerosa. Mi madre, Mary Kate, compartía con él ese mismo afán por el espectáculo; aunque la religión terminó siendo su destino, cuando decidió dedicar su vida a la iglesia hasta que fue ministra clerical. Desde ese entonces, no se permitió sino el recto camino de sus votos.
Somos descendientes de esclavos africanos, crecí en un ambiente inclinado hacia lo artístico, sobre todo a la música. Recuerdo que todos cantábamos y tocábamos algún instrumento, era en ese ambiente donde disfrutábamos de espectáculos que nosotros mismos organizábamos en casa y nos aplaudíamos entusiasmados de nuestros talentos.
La inclinación por el mundo musical fue algo tan natural que apenas nos dimos cuenta. Mi madre cantaba godspel y cuando lo hacía, parecía que estaba en el mismísimo cielo porque la tonalidad de los evangelios en su voz era una verdadera sinfonía de dioses.
Yo tocaba órgano y cantaba desde los tres años y en mi primer recital contaba con apenas diez. Durante ese evento mis padres fueron obligados a ceder sus asientos de primera fila a una pareja de blancos; fue la cita con mi compromiso de luchar por los derechos civiles de las personas de color.
Caracterizada por su compromiso contra el racismo, bajo el lema de Black is the colour (Negro es el color), su temática está totalmente enraizada en las tradiciones afroamericanas

Gracias a ayudas financieras de amigos y conocidos influyentes, pude irme a estudiar piano clásico a Nueva York, no sin antes ser rechazada en varias escuelas de música en Filadelfia; nos habíamos mudado a esa ciudad, todos, mis padres y mis hermanos.
Mi primera oportunidad de trabajar formalmente fue en un piano-bar de Atlantic City. Fui contratada para tocar el piano; pero canté, improvisé una versión de I loves you Porgy, de George Gershwin. Mi voz no era típica, no de esos tonos ¨populares¨; sin embargo, agradó y conseguí el empleo.
De ahí en adelante mi carrera tuvo un impulso extraordinario, en esa época también nació mi nombre tal y como se conoce hoy mundialmente: Nina Simone. Al año de estar trabajando grabé mi primer disco Jazz as played in an exclusive side street club con la disquera Bethlehem Records. También gravé con Colpix (Columbia Pictures Records), con Philips, discográfica y RCA, una de mis canciones favoritas: To love somebody de los Bee Gees.

En el año 1961 contraje matrimonio con Andy Stroud, un detective de Nueva York, que luego fuera mi mánager y con quien compuse varios temas. Al año siguiente tuvimos nació Lisa Celeste. La vida en pareja no fue fácil, después del nacimiento de nuestra hija continuamente nos sorprendíamos en medio de diferencias por cualquier vanalidad, que terminaban en férreas discusiones y algunas veces con amenaza de irnos a las manos.
Vivir en los Estado Unidos no es fácil, en plena década de los 90 el racismo vertebraba toda la sociedad. Continuamente era protagonista y testigo de continuas vejaciones, esta situación, acumulada durante años, hizo que me auto impusiera un destierro. Separada de mi esposo, me residencié en varios países, me fui a Liberia durante cuatro años; también residí un tiempo en Barbados, Suiza, Gran Bretaña, los Países Bajos y Trinidad.
Muy pocos sabían sobre mis episodios depresivos, con los que lidié durante años, para finalmente ser diagnosticada con trastorno de bipolaridad. Aun así, se vendían millones de copias de mis discos en todo el mundo y algunos de mis temas fueron tomados para bandas sonoras de películas de Columbia y para una campaña publicitaria del perfume Chanel Nº 5.
Corría el años de 1992 cuando di el consentimiento para publicar mi biografía: I put a spell on you, traducida a varios idiomas, entre ellos, holandés, francés y alemán y el holandés. Un años después, me instalé en forma definitiva en Francia, año en que salió a la luz mi último álbum, A single woman.

The name on my birth certificate is Eunice Kathleen Waymon, I was born in North Carolina in 1933. My father, John Divine Waymon, was a true artist; but his dreams as a dancer, singer and actor faded to take care of a large family. My mother, Mary Kate, shared with him the same desire for entertainment; although religion ended up being her destiny, when she decided to dedicate her life to the church until she was a clerical minister. Since then, she allowed herself nothing but the straight path of her vows.
We are descendants of African slaves, I grew up in an environment inclined towards the artistic, especially music. I remember that we all sang and played some instrument, it was in that environment where we enjoyed shows that we ourselves organized at home and we applauded each other with enthusiasm for our talents.
The inclination for the musical world was something so natural that we hardly noticed it. My mother sang godspel and when she did, she seemed like she was in heaven itself because the tonality of the gospels in her voice was a true symphony of gods.
I played organ and sang since I was three years old and in my first recital I had barely ten. During that event my parents were forced to give up their front row seats to a white couple; was the appointment with my commitment to fight for the civil rights of people of color.

Thanks to financial help from influential friends and acquaintances, I was able to study classical piano in New York, but not before being rejected by various music schools in Philadelphia; we had moved to that city, all of us, my parents and my brothers.
My first opportunity to work formally was in a piano bar in Atlantic City. I was hired to play the piano; but I sang, I improvised a version of I loves you Porgy, by George Gershwin. My voice was not typical, not one of those "popular" tones; however, he liked it and I got the job.
