Beauty, like many women, was something that I struggled with greatly. Throughout history, people have always been bombarded with images of what real beauty should be, and growing up during the rise of the internet, it's became even more difficult for me to avoid or ignore. Then, multi-billion dollar industries, such as Instagram, came into being, businesses that purely profit off people's physical insecurities. If one doesn't look like the models, they almost begin to wonder if there is something wrong with them, while everyone else around them seems to look picture perfect...
La belleza, como muchas mujeres, era algo con lo que luché mucho. A lo largo de la historia, las personas siempre han sido bombardeadas con imágenes de lo que debería ser la belleza real, y al crecer durante el auge de Internet, se me hizo aún más difícil evitar o ignorar. Luego, surgieron industrias multimillonarias, como Instagram, empresas que se benefician únicamente de las inseguridades físicas de las personas. Si uno no se parece a los modelos, casi comienzan a preguntarse si hay algún problema con ellos, mientras que todos los demás a su alrededor parecen verse perfectos...
So what is the reasoning for this? Why are so many people, from various cultures around the world, so obsessed with beauty? Well, probably the biggest factor behind our obsession is "survival of the fittest," no? Obviously those who are more universally attractive will have better chances of attracting potential partners, thus a better chance of passing on their genetic lineage. Even though times have changed, someone may not want to have children, etc., we cannot ignore this primal, biological reason for our existence. We place such a high value on beauty due to the nature of its competition.
Entonces, ¿cuál es el razonamiento para esto? ¿Por qué tantas personas, de diversas culturas alrededor del mundo, están tan obsesionadas con la belleza? Bueno, probablemente el factor más importante detrás de nuestra obsesión es la "supervivencia del más apto", ¿no? Obviamente, aquellos que son universalmente más atractivos tendrán mejores posibilidades de atraer socios potenciales, por lo tanto, una mejor oportunidad de transmitir su linaje genético. Aside from that, why else do we value beauty so greatly? Well, as I mentioned earlier, money/profit! The beauty industry is massive, if not one of the biggest businesses in the world! There are plenty of ways to profit off people's insecurities as well. Make-up, hair products, clothes and accessories, weight management, cosmetic surgeries--again, billions of dollars to be made! And, again, while it could be argued that this is done to "feel good about oneself," it is ultimately done in the pursuit of becoming more universally attractive.
Aparte de eso, ¿por qué valoramos tanto la belleza? Bueno, como mencioné antes, ¡dinero/beneficio! ¡La industria de la belleza es enorme, si no uno de los negocios más grandes del mundo! También hay muchas maneras de sacar provecho de las inseguridades de las personas. Maquillaje, productos para el cabello, ropa y accesorios, control de peso, cirugías cosméticas: ¡una vez más, miles de millones de dólares por ganar! Y, de nuevo, si bien se podría argumentar que esto se hace para "sentirse bien con uno mismo", en última instancia se hace en la búsqueda de volverse más universalmente atractivo.
Lastly, I suppose one could say that people just enjoy looking at beautiful things, no? We can find many things beautiful: nature, music, food... Of course this would apply to human beings as well! But why this obsession spills out onto others, rather than being confined to oneself, probably stems from my original point. While we want to look good ourselves, we also enjoy being surrounded by those of similar beauty. It is not uncommon to hear the phrases "they are out of my league," or "I can do better," when thinking of potential partners' beauty compared to oneself.
Por último, supongo que se podría decir que la gente simplemente disfruta mirando cosas hermosas, ¿no? Podemos encontrar muchas cosas hermosas: la naturaleza, la música, la comida... ¡Por supuesto que esto también se aplicaría a los seres humanos! Pero por qué esta obsesión se extiende a los demás, en lugar de limitarse a uno mismo, probablemente se deba a mi punto original. Si bien queremos lucir bien nosotros mismos, también disfrutamos estar rodeados de personas de belleza similar.
