Chapter Two ended up being almost eighty pages and I still don't feel I've amply covered the intricacies of the rise of the psychiatric and related treatment industry.

Or the historical connections between the U.S.A and the World Health Organization.

And the way in which the manuals (DSM and ICD), used by both of these, to diagnose and code mental disorders both came to be and were developed over the years.

But Chapter Two should give people more than enough information to begin to look at mental health and addiction with more insight and, hopefully, less fear.

Because the Chapter is so content heavy I was unable to add the Bibliography, in addition to the citations, on the post to follow this evening (or tomorrow at the latest).

I have, thus, placed the Citations, Bibliography and additional sources in this post and will link to it, from Perfect: Chapter Two - The Importance of Words, for people to access moving forward.

Additional Sources of Interest

There was additional research and reading as I’ve been looking into this since late 2014 / 2015.

I’ve shared the bibliography that I still have links for and the papers I downloaded and saved for reference.

But I’m not good with admin and this has been extensive investigation and learning, so apologies if I have left anything out.

Which I know I have.

There is plenty of information online for you to further your own reading if this information interests you.

I highly recommend visiting Dr Gabor Maté’s website.

Dr Maté is the leading expert (in my opinion) on addiction, trauma and the mind/body connection. You will find most of his work on his website, to help you understand more about how trauma works, the impact it has on an individual and why you may have it even if you aren't, yet, aware of it.

Dr Maté eloquently explains that trauma isn't necessarily what has happened to us. We are, sometimes, left with trauma because of the things that didn't happen to us.

In short, even stressed parenting can result in C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress) which is why people suffer with anxiety and depression and can end up using substances and addictive behaviours in attempts to self soothe.

The Mad in America website also regularly releases good articles on the mental health industry.

Richard Grannon explains C-PTSD very well on his Mental Fortress channel on YouTube.

The Therapist Uncensored website has talks on regulating the nervous system naturally, amongst other great podcasts on modern approaches, therapies and practices for mental health.

Annie Wright has some wonderful insight into dysfunctional family systems and roles (which usually cause C-PTSD) on her blog.

Let's face it, since nobody knew much about how things worked back then, many of us were raised in dysfunctional family systems even if we aren't aware of it. Yet.

And the developmental and/or relational trauma (that often presents as mental "illness" and addiction later on in life) we were left with wasn't even anybody's fault at times.

I would strongly suggest, if you seek professional treatment, that you make sure your doctor or therapist has a trauma informed perspective and approach.
