I wasn't planning to talk about Queer, but the truth is that I didn't expect to like it that much either. Although I was sure I was going to like it and enjoy it a lot, both for Guadagnino and Daniel Craig, I was really expecting a gay love story with a touch of tragedy, but what Guadagnino (and Burroughs, who wrote the original novel) gave me was such a mesmerizing and out of the ordinary experience that I simply cannot not sit here, in front of the laptop to write, and not write something about the movie. The film that Guadagnino wanted to make for several years is finally in theaters, and the truth is an audiovisual experience that I have rarely lived in the cinema, becoming also one of my favorite films of the year.
If you haven't seen the movie and you are one of those people who like to go into movies without any kind of context, the truth is that this paragraph is not for you. I don't intend to spoiler about the movie, but I do want to tell some facts that might enhance the experience of watching the movie: Burroughs, writer of the novel on which the movie is based, wrote Queer as a sequel to his other novel, Junkie, and wrote Queer while on trial for the murder of his wife. He murdered her “unintentionally” because they were playing at taking things off each other's heads with a gun, and that's where the accident came from; with this in mind, it is normal to understand that Burroughs wrote drugged and drunk most of the time, so his stories also denoted that style of prose.
So, what is Queer about? Well, it tells the story of William Lee, a man in his sixties who falls in love at first sight with Eugene, a student who is experimenting with his sexuality and begins to have a kind of relationship with Lee. This is interesting from the first moment because of the pop direction that Guadagnino creates, but the truth is that the film from a point onwards leaves the story in the background to show us something much more interesting than almost any story, and that is the idea of cinema as a sensory experience that, truth be told, works perfectly and that feels as if the film had been thought just to make a specific scene. A scene that is as hypnotic as it is dazzling.
However, this is not to say that the movie is bad or anything like that. I've been talking all post about how amazing the movie is, and the truth is that I'm an aesthete from beginning to end, and that the story or the script matters little to me when the images are pretty, but coming from a work by Burroughs, the truth is that the story and the characters also stand out, especially for the performances of all the people who were in the project. Undoubtedly, one of the best films of the year and an experience worth seeing in theaters.

No pensaba hablar de Queer, pero la verdad es que tampoco esperé que me gustara tanto. Aunque estaba seguro de que me iba a gustar y que la iba a disfrutar un monton, tanto por Guadagnino como por Daniel Craig, realmente estaba esperando una historia de amor homosexual con un toque de tragedia, pero lo que me dio Guadagnino (y Burroughs, quien escribió la novela original) fue una experiencia tan hipnotizaste y tan fuera de lo común que simplemente, no puedo no sentarme aquí, frente a la laptop a escribir, y no escribir algo sobre la película. La película que Guadagnino quería hacer desde hace ya varios años por fin está en cines, y la verdad es una experiencia audiovisual que pocas veces he vivido en el cine, convirtiéndose también en una de mis películas favoritas del año.
Si no has visto la película y eres de esas personas a las que les gusta entrar en las películas sin ningún tipo de contexto, la verdad es que este párrafo no es para ti. No pienso hacer spoiler sobre la película, pero quiero contar algunos datos que puede que mejoren la experiencia de ver la película: Burroughs, escritor de la novela en la que se basa la película, escribió Queer como secuela de su otra novela, Yonqui, y escribió Queer mientras estaba siendo juzgado por el asesinato de su esposa. La asesinó “sin querer” debido a que jugaban a quitarse cosas de la cabeza con un arma, y pues de ahí salió el accidente; con esto en mente, es normal entender que Burroughs escribía drogado y borracho la mayoría del tiempo, por lo que sus relatos también denotaban ese estilo de prosa.
Entonces, ¿de qué va Queer? Pues cuenta la historia de William Lee, un señor de unos sesenta años que se enamora a primera vista de Eugene, un estudiante que está experimentando su sexualidad y que comienza a tener una especie de relación con Lee. Esto es interesante desde el primer momento por la dirección pop que crea Guadagnino, pero la verdad es que la película a partir de un punto deja la historia en segundo plano para mostrarnos algo mucho más interesante que casi cualquier historia, y es la idea del cine como experiencia sensorial que, la verdad, funciona a la perfección y que se siente cómo si la película hubiese sido pensada solo para hacer un escena en específico. Una escena que es tan hipnótica como deslumbrante además.
Sin embargo, esto no quiere decir que la película sea mala o algo por el estilo. He estado todo el post hablando de lo increíble que es la película, y la verdad es que soy un esteta de principio a fin, y que la historia o el guion me importan poco cuando las imágenes son lindas, pero viniendo de una obra de Burroughs, la verdad es que la historia y los personajes también se destacan, sobre todo por las actuaciones de todas las personas que estaban en el proyecto. Sin duda alguna, una de las mejores películas del año y toda una experiencia que vale la pena ver en cines.
