The first thing I heard about The Brutalist was that it was shot on Vistavision, which many moviegoers and critics thought was basically a marvel of modern cinema, but why? That was the only thing I wondered when I saw this format mentioned in the reviews. Then I read a bit and found out that the last movie shot entirely in vistavision before the brutalist, was the impenetrable face, in 1961, and that it is an extremely expensive format that is practically only used to give a nicer finish and less grain in movies, so now they have chosen to use it only in some action scenes, in movies like Robocop, star wars, intersterllar and several others.
And I don't know if I have critical cinephile friends reading me around here, who must be dying to read things like how vistavision only serves to make the movie “look prettier” and not talking about all the engineering behind it, or mentioning the impenetrable face as the last one to be filmed like that, when there have been a few after that one, but the truth is that I'm someone who is more driven by what I feel, and boy, the brutalist will make you feel. At least I, who went to see it in theaters and really enjoyed its intermission, am excited just talking about this film, because it feels like one of those timeless films that will be shown in theater classes and used as an example for directing, cinematography and acting.
The Brutalist is a film of almost four hours that has in its middle a fifteen minute intermission that serves to, more than anything, two things; rest a little of the monumental work you are seeing, and give introduction to a second part that for many may be a little more tedious than the first and in turn fall a little in terms of pace and quality in general, however, that does not detract from the fact that the film is a success in many ways. The first scenes, which show the life of the migrant and how he seeks an American dream, is a beautiful thing that reminds me in feeling of what I felt watching Padirno 2 or The Phantom Thread, something that I feel that not any director can do, and the second, ends up being something like a very well directed thriller that I feel I have already seen several times, but still I still like it.
However, The Brutalist is about a brutalist architect and he kind of makes a masterpiece, but his work doesn't convince me. Of course, if I leave that aside and I don't care much about the final result of our protagonist, the film in general is a marvel from beginning to end, but there is something in me that keeps believing that, if our protagonist is such a good architect, he wouldn't have made a building like his masterpiece. Likewise, I can't not recommend this film, let alone tell you to wait to watch it at home, as it is a film that feels like it was made for the cinema.

Lo primero que escuché de The brutalist fue que está filmada con Vistavision, lo que a muchos cinéfilos y críticos les pareció básicamente una maravilla del cine moderno, pero, ¿por qué? Era lo único que me preguntaba al ver que mencionaban este formato en las críticas. Después leí un poco y me enteré que la última película grabada enteramente en vistavision antes de the brutalist, fue el rostro impenetrable, en 1961, y que es un formato sumamente caro que es prácticamente solo utilizado para dar un acabado más lindo y con menos grano en las películas, por lo que ahora han optado por usarlo solo en algunas escenas de acción, en películas como Robocop, star wars, intersterllar y varias otras.
Y no sé si tenga amigos cinéfilos críticos leyéndome por aquí, que se deben estar muriendo al leer cosas como que vistavision solo sirve para que la película “se vea más bonita” y no hablar de toda la ingeniería que hay detrás, o el mencionar el rostro impenetrable como la última en ser grabada así, cuando ha habido unas cuantas después de esa, pero es que la verdad soy alguien que se deja llevar más por lo que siente, y vaya que the brutalist te hará sentir. Por lo menos yo, que fui a verla en cines y que disfrute mucho de su intermedio, estoy emocionado solo al hablar de esta película, porque se siente como una de esas películas atemporales que se proyectarán en clases de cines y que se usarán como ejemplo para dirección, fotografía y actuación.
The brutalist es una película de casi cuatro horas que tiene en su mitad un intermedio de quince minutos que sirve para, más que todo, dos cosas; descansar un poco de la obra tan monumental que estás viendo, y dar introducción a una segunda parte que para muchos puede ser un poco más tediosa que la primera y a su vez caer un poco en cuanto a ritmo y calidad en general, sin embargo, eso no quita que la película es un acierto en muchas formas. Las primeras escenas, que muestran la vida del migrante y como busca un sueño americano, es una cosa hermosa que me recuerda en sensación a lo que sentí viendo el padirno 2 o el hilo fantasma, cosa que siento que no cualquier director puede hacer, y la segunda, termina siendo algo así como un thriller muy bien dirigido que siento que ya he visto varias veces, pero de igual forma no deja de gustarme.
Sin embargo, the brutalist tratándose de un arquitecto brutalista y como que hace una obra magna, su obra no me termina de convencer. Claro, si dejo eso a un lado y no me importa mucho el resultado final de nuestro protagonista, la película en general es una maravilla de principio a fin, pero hay algo en mí que no deja de creer que, si nuestro protagonista es tan buen arquitecto, no habría hecho un edificio así como su obra magna. De igual forma, no puedo no recomendar esta película y mucho menos decirles que esperen para verla en casa, ya que es una película que se siente creada para el cine.
