June 27, 2023

I never liked sushi until I started working in Hong Kong, where everyone loves Japanese cuisine. I was hesitant to eat sushi the first time my boss took me to Genki because I don't really like raw foods. I finally developed a likeness to sushi as my boss frequently took me to sushi restaurants.

During my entire stay here, I've only been to one Japanese sushi restaurant, Genki. So I've been yearning to visit other shops to see if their flavors are distinctive. I was in K11 last weekend, and decided to look for a spot to eat dinner after seeing the finale of the dragon boat race along the harbor.

I came across Food Playground located on the lower floor with different restaurants serving different cuisines, tea sets, and snack foods. So this place is the food court of the mall. It is as fancy as the mall because all foods are quite expensive. There are Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Macanese restaurants, and even pastry and tea shops.

After looking through every food shops, I decided on Oomaki because all of its food sets seemed enticing. As implied by the name, Oomaki is a sushi shop with all ingredients freshly imported from Japan.

There were sushi, hot bento, and rice sets available. However, it had been a while since I had sushi, so I decided to order a set which cost me HK$118. Inside this wooden box was the sushi set with udon noodles and sauce.

Sushi sets are definitely less expensive to purchase than individual pieces as some cost HK$25 for just one piece. My order consist of a salad, fried dumplings, and fish, Hokkaido rice topped with salmon, caviar, tako or octopus, small chunks of tamagoyaki or Japanese egg, cucumber, and another kind of fish. Wasabi was in the middle, but I didn't use it because I don't like it.

This was honestly too many for me so I just ate them slowly. I liked the taste of salad with sesame and balsamic vinegar sauce. The Hokkaido rice tasted really good, but among all the sushi toppings, I just didn't like the taste of the octopus with some wasabi flavor. I do consume octopus, but not the uncooked one.

I just left the pieces of raw octopus on my tray because it doesn't taste nice to me. I initially thought that fried shrimp was served alongside the fried dumplings. But it turned out to be fish but I liked it. I ate every bit of it since it was tasty and the fish bones were soft. The bowl of udon noodles was eaten last as I wanted to drink the soup so there's no need to buy other drinks to save some money, lol.

I should say that my HK$118 (US$15.06) was worth it. I was satisfied with my sushi set and left the food playground with a happy and full tummy.
