Claire's Crazy bakes and Kitchen Hacks Chapter 44 - Oats: A Winter Guilty Pleasure With Plenty of Nutrients!

I mean, I suppose there are healthier ways to eat oats oO but if you have these few extra luxuries lying around your kitchen, believe me, it makes the WORLD of difference to this otherwise healthy yet boring breakfast choice.

It's winter here in South Africa. Normally in the States and up North in the World, people are scrambling over pumpkin spice lattes and looking for warm comfort food in October, but of course, we're upside down.

So, this is my solution for a warm belly. This recipe does contain quite a bit of sugar and lactose, so if you're diabetic or lactose intolerant, this probably isn't for you, but if you are looking for something that tastes like Granny made it, you've come to the right place.

I cook my oats on the gas stove because it's just so fast. It's even faster than the microwave. It takes forever to heat up a plate on the big oven and is a waste of electricity. This means I can have this during loadshedding (scheduled electricity blackouts thanks to our failing electricity grid) too!

What do you need?
A big spoon for stirring
A small pot
A bowl for serving
A spoon for eating!
A sharp knife for banana cutting and a teaspoon for measuring sugar and spices.
A measuring cup

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of oats
1 and 1/2 cups full cream milk
Two tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste)
Two teaspoons of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg (adjust to taste)
1 x banana
Butter

Stick the oats and the milk into the pot and place it on your gas stove and medium to high heat. Be careful to watch the pot. While swopping water for milk is the first step to making this taste amazing, it is important to remember that milk behaves differently to heat. That's why it froths up so nicely for your latte or your cappuccino. If you forget about it, you'll have a volcano on your hands. Also, it's important to give it a stir every few minutes anyway to avoid clumps.

Once you've got the texture you want (about 7 minutes cooking time on my gas stove), you can serve! If yours has dried out a bit too much you can add an extra splash of milk.

Top with a slice or two of butter,

Sprinkle with sugar

Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg (nutmeg is a natural antidepressant and has anti-anxiety properties)

Top with sliced banana

Then mush it all together and munch!
