Mesmerized by shape, loved even more for its authentic taste served with curry and pickles.
Have you ever enjoyed pancakes or flat-bread with a lace shape that looks like a net? Roti Jala is popularly served in Asian countries, especially those with Malay populations. There are so many variations of Roti Jala. But the most common is served with chicken curry and pickles.
Meanwhile, in my area, Roti Jala is white, not yellow. In some areas such as from Malaysia, I see Roti Jala in yellow color which comes from the mixture of turmeric in the batter.
ROTI JALA FOR A SPECIAL DAY
We celebrated Eid Al-Fitr a few days ago, after we had been fasting for a month. On Hari Raya, we serve many delicious foods that we rarely eat as daily food.
On that big day, we generally serve foods with a gravy texture with coconut milk. Starting from Rice Cakes with “Rendang”, “Soto”, “Opor”, and more. Including one of them Roti Jala that I'm talking about this time.
Actually we can eat Roti Jala for any moment, don't have to wait for a special day. It's just that for our family, curry served as a complement to Roti Jala is a heavy meal with a lot of fat that is not good to be consumed as often as possible. So, we choose to serve Roti Jala on certain special days.
This time, I'm serving Roti Jala during the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Fitr. This is not Roti Jala I made by myself because I won't have time to make Roti Jala in large portions. Moreover, many family members from far away came to my house. So I ordered Roti Jala from a cook who has become a regular for me.
I bought a kilogram of Roti Jala. Quite a lot and that's more than enough for a feast this time. The Roti Jala that came to my house were packed in large containers separated by curry sauce, roti jala, and pickles.
Apart from being a special treat for my family members, the most important thing is that I myself really like Roti Jala. I won't buy food I don't like even if it's not for me. I think I should like the food I will give to other people. At least I already know that the taste of the food is not bad, although sometimes it's definitely not always other people like the food I like. But most importantly, I make sure that the food I choose has a taste that many people have a chance to judge as good food.
So then, I thought of making a creative photo of Roti Jala. I thought about how to plating Roti Jala in another way. I love to fool other people's eyes because I like to present something old in a new way.
Maybe for people, Roti Jala is an ordinary traditional food. So through the plating I created, I want other people to see a different side of Roti Jala. Stay tuned!
Roti Jala Photo Session
Photo session with Roti Jala was very challenging. It's quite difficult to serve food that has to be served with as many gravy complements as serving soup. But I try not to take a bowl. I tried to think of a non-bowl serving alternative at first.
Serving soupy food with a bowl is an ordinary thing. So, my job is to look for extraordinary things).
Serving Roti Jala With Salad Plate
In the first photo session, I decided to use a salad plate. I don't use the technique of watering the main object with gravy. Instead, I pre-prepare the gravy on a plate that's somewhat shaped like a bowl.
The thing to note here, I have to separate the filling in the curry gravy. There are pieces of chicken and also pieces of potato. So what is on the serving plate is only curry gravy without the filling of the curry. Later the curry filling will be added at a later stage.
After finishing with the curry gravy, it's time to carefully arrange the Roti Jala. Oh, wait, before putting the Roti Jala on the serving plate, I decorated the Roti Jala with pickles. In the pickle contains pineapple, chili, cucumber, also chili. But what I use for garnishes on top of Roti Jala is pineapple, slices of red chili and green chili.
Another tricky thing I do is not to put Roti Jala on the whole plate. Put Roti Jala on one side of the plate. It looks cute.
For the finishing touch, I added the filling from the curry, pieces of chicken, and potatoes. Do not pile the filling. Place it spread out to make it look more random patterned to make it look more natural.
To sweeten vibes the results of this food photography, I used a thin and long piece of wood to put Roti Jala with slices of cucumber, and pickles. So if the Roti Jala on the serving plate has been eaten by someone, then that person can add more Roti Jala and pickles that have been provided.
I really like the photos from Roti Jala this time. It looks new, but with a taste that has not changed. Still have a sense that deserves to be loved. <3
Serving Roti Jala With A Bowl
Not finished with just a salad plate, I finally also tried it with a bowl. I suspected from the start that using a bowl for serving was to have ordinary results. But I still try to do that so that we can both see the comparison of serving with a plate and with a bowl.
I put all the filling in a bowl. It's just that you need to be careful so that not all parts of the white Roti Jala get curry gravy. Make sure there are parts of Roti Jala that remain in the original color, whether it's white or the yellow version.
To me, the result does look good, but it's better on the plate version. Do you think the same as me?
Well, I hope you guys enjoy Roti Jala photography this time and can satisfy your eyes. I convey the savory, spicy, and creamy taste through the pictures. Have a great day, HIVE LOVERS!
