Migrant crisis at Greek-Turkish border in second week, EU mulls more aid By Reuters

The European Union on Friday begged migrants on the Turkish fringe to stop attempting to cross into Greece however dangled the prospect of more guide for Ankara as a standoff between Greek uproar police and refugees entered a second week.  

Tens of thousands of migrants have been attempting to get into Greece, an EU part state, since Turkey said on Feb. 28 it would never again attempt to keep them on its region as concurred in 2016 with the EU as a byproduct of billions of euros in help.  

Greek and Turkish security forces again conveyed nerve gas on Friday, witnesses said, sending plumes of smoke over the Kastanies-Pazarkule outskirt crossing. Some migrants touched stinging eyes with water. Other trekked through fields examining for chinks in the very much monitored outskirts.  

"The news about the supposed openness (of the Greek-Turkish fringe) is false and individuals should do whatever it takes not to move there," the EU's top ambassador, Josep Borrell, told reporters during a gathering of EU outside ministers in Croatia.  

The EU could offer more cash past the 6 billion euros ($6.79 billion) vowed in 2016 to support the refugees however Turkey must first stop using them as a "negotiating concession", he said.  

Turkey, which hosts almost 4 million Syrian war refugees, says the EU has neglected to respect before promises. It also wants increasingly European support in Syria, where its troops are going head to head against Russian-upheld Syrian government forces.
