First Flight And Photography - Birds In 2023

Sunshine on the 1st January 2023 midday, after days of rain some flooding, a scurry across the ground which I could not see with the speed at which it moved, my son mentioned he thought it was a tiny bird.

It emerged in low flight into a clump of ferns, tightly knitted rooting we searched high and lo for a few minutes, still unable to find this tiny bird, parent close continuously calling. This is the most I have ever seen them out in the open....

We moved away noticing both parents frantically calling to the young one now in hiding, both adults appear to know exactly where this tiny bird was to coax it out into the open then take flight, never had the pleasure seeing this to the happy ending.

The type of fern this little bird was lost inside, a mixture of succulents with ferns tumbling around my garden

What a way to start the new year with a traumatic beginning having us grovel through the bush then have to step away letting the parents take over to do their best, I really hope they managed to coerce it out.

Cape White-eye (Zosterops virens)

Adult size is 10 cm with very little difference between male and female adults. Geographically native to South Africa, we hear the sweet gentle rolling warble often outdoors, seldom see them as they blend into nature so well.

Charming little characters forage through trees and bushes gleaning insects wherever they find them including spiders, enjoy fruit and nectar picking the odd insect straight out of the air while winging it around the garden.

Apparently three species are slightly different in belly and breast colouring, the south having gray with the north showing more greenish scattered across our country with the yellow a more peachy appearance Orange River region. Cape White-eye is similar to the Yellow White-eye each time I do further research I learn more, that is what makes nature so exiting to me.
