Media docena de chicas Cuhivers en la Habana, decidímos encontrarnos para romper la monotonía de la comunicación enteramente virtual y había un deseo común, tomar helados. Dicho sea que en Cuba esto es un antojo permanente, las altas temperaturas la mayor parte del año empujan hacia lo fresco y el helado cumple al cien por ciento esta espectativa. Y lo primero que salta a la mente cuando el paladar ladra por un helado; es la mítica heladería Coppelia situada en el corazón del Vedado. En la bella esquina de 23 y L, rodeada de espectaculares edificaciones llenas de historia como el enorme Cine Yara -antiguo Radio Centro- o el Hotel Havana Hilton -que después del 59 pasó a llamarse Habana Libre- con su gigantesco mural de la artista Amelia Peláez recibiendo a los visitantes.

En esta esquina estuvo hasta el 1954, el hospital Reina Mercedes, sus terrenos cobraron muchísimo valor y hasta se cocinó el proyecto de levantar un rascacielos que no llegó a materializarse. Después se edificó un parque de promoción turística lleno de atracciones pero finalmente terminó siendo La Catedral del Helado -como también se le conoce al Coppelia de la Habana-.
The Reina Mercedes Hospital was located on this corner until 1954, its land became very valuable and the project to build a skyscraper was planned but never materialized. Ahí ven llegando a las chicas, que habíamos quedado a la 11:00am pero la gravedad del transporte no tuvo piedad con ninguna. Solo yo, que vivo en El Vedado y puedo llegar a pie, estuve justo a la hora. Milagrosamente la primera en aparecer fue @ylaffittep, madre de dos y residente en las afueras de la Habana. Después hicieron su aparición @lileisabel y @jordi0827 con su hermosa hija; María Claudia. Acto seguido llega nuestra @janetedita y solo nos faltaba la @nanixx que venía a pie desde dos km mas allá y se le había perdido el peine, pero ya la ven haciendo su entrada triunfal.
There you see the girls arriving, we had arranged to meet at 11:00am but the gravity of the transport had no mercy on any of them. Only I, who live in El Vedado and can get there on foot, was right on time. Miraculously the first to show up was @ylaffittep, mother of two and resident of the outskirts of Havana. Then @lileisabel and @jordi0827 made their appearance with their beautiful daughter; Maria Claudia. Then our @janetedita arrived and we were only missing @nanixx who came on foot from two kilometers away and had lost her comb, but you can see her making her triumphal entrance.
Con estoicismo, charlas y risas vamos haciendo nuestra fila, o "cola" como le llamamos en Cuba. Durante una hora o más estuvimos en esa faena, había mucha gente queriendo tomar un heladito al mediodía como es habitual en Coppelia. Súmele el retraso de las chicas, que dos veces tuvimos que rotar en la cola -dejar pasar a los de atrás y quedar nuevamente de primeras- hasta que completamos el team "CuHivas" como les llamé cariñosamente y en la próxima llamada entrar ordenadamente. En cada llamada de la cola pasan una cantidad de personas que el chico a cargo "amablemente" va guiando como si estuviéramos en un campamento y nos dice -con previas paradas de varios minutos- dónde debemos sentarnos. Nosotras solo sabíamos chacharear y reírnos, hacía mucho que queríamos encontrarnos y eran muchos los temas, de la vida y de Hive, que teníamos pendiente para un encuentro presencial.
With stoicism, chatter and laughter we were already standing in line, or "queue" as we call it in Cuba. For an hour or more we were in that line, there were many people wanting to have an ice cream at noon as usual in Coppelia. Add to that the delay of the girls, and twice we had to rotate in the queue -letting those behind us pass and then we were first again- until we completed the CuHivas team as I affectionately called them and at the next call we entered in an orderly fashion. At each call of the queue a number of people pass by and the guy in charge "kindly" guides us as if we were in a camp and tells us -with previous stops of several minutes- where we should sit. We only knew how to chat and laugh, we had wanted to meet each other for a long time and there were many topics, about life and Hive, that we had pending for a face-to-face meeting.

Yo, hacía más de 17 años que no entraba, detesto hacer colas y me las evito a toda costa aunque me pierda algo que desee ardientemente. Saquen sus conclusiones entonces de cuán divertida estuvo la velada de espera para entrar, que no me dí cuenta del paso del tiempo.
-Walking...up...advance...stop!!!! Under these orders we moved forward towards the longed-for goal of having an ice cream at Coppelia. I had not been there for more than 17 years, I hate waiting in line and I avoid them at all costs even if I miss something that I ardently desire. Al fin en punta...ya casi al momento de subir a lo que le llaman la torre de Coppelia. Mientras las chicas no dejan de hablar y reir como buenas cubanas, yo leía la pizarra de ofertas y... gran decepción. No esperaba jamás los 26 sabores que hicieron famosa a la heladería. Pero al menos 5 sabores creía encontrar. Solo dos hacían acto de presencia en la tablilla y en la mesa. Mantecado y Coco en distintas combinaciones para darle una fantasía de variedad a aquella exigua pizarra que exibía los restos fósiles de una antigua diversidad de sabores y colores capaces de emular al carnaval habanero.
Finally at the top...almost time to go up to what they call the Coppelia tower. While the girls kept talking and laughing like good Cubans, I was reading the offers board and.... big disappointment. I never expected the 26 flavors that made the ice cream shop famous. But I thought I would find at least 5 flavors. Only two made an appearance on the board and on the table. La Catedral del Helado seguirá siendo el punto de encuentro de los cubanos.
