I have been living on Margarita Island for several years, perhaps because I have done so intermittently, my life has always passed between two cities: Porlamar and Pampatar. I practically never visited the others that were a little further away.
In 2021 I returned to live on the island again, and this time I started working in one of those cities I never went to, La Asunci贸n. This is the capital of the state, a place where the history of Margarita Island is concentrated, there are its main historical buildings, architecture from centuries ago and the traditions that merged between the locals and colonizers converge.
I have fallen in love with this city, discovering its corners, museums, old houses and, of course, its gastronomy. There is a wind of options, and on this occasion we visited a century-old bakery located a few blocks from our workplace that is on one of the streets that surrounds the main square of the city.
The place is called "El Pan de mama". It is an artisanal bakery with more than a hundred years of tradition, as they describe themselves. This establishment, along with its founder, is cultural heritage of the city of La Asunci贸n. Their specialty is milk bread although they make a wide variety of Creole breads and sweets.
I had seen, read and heard incredible things about this place and yesterday I had the opportunity to go for the first time. I went with a dear friend and coworker to have lunch together. We ordered wheat empanadas filled with chicken, which were delicious. They had a sweet flavor that reminded me of hallaca stew, a typical Venezuelan Christmas dish. As I was tasting the empanada I could taste the raisins and capers that the chicken stew had, fundamental ingredients that are also present in the hallaca, and for this reason it brought back that memory of my palate. Both my friend and I loved them, as you can see perfectly in the photos. She closed her eyes because she says that delicious things have to be eaten with your eyes closed, I agree. We both look happy.
The place is a town house, which is perfectly preserved, where the bakery has operated for years with very few modifications even in the way of preparing and cooking its delicious recipes. Upon entering you see the display case with different products, sweet and savory. Breads, cookies, empanadas, Creole sweets and more. Among them the delicious and very typical "Pi帽onate", the sweet Margarita flavor par excellence, but this one deserves a separate publication.
The decoration is simple but beautiful, always taking care of the details that at times makes you feel that you have traveled to the past to enjoy a Margarita that refuses to disappear through the recipes of "mom's bread" that are passed on to a new generation. that honor it and prepare it to preserve the cultural heritage that it has become.
Thank you for joining me, visiting my blog, reading me and supporting me. Have a wonderful day full of many successes and good energy!
