Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant (Notes)

This is a question that is usually brought up but not many actually take the time to find out the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant. In this video, my brother MFA goes over how deodorants and antiperspirants are both used to combat odors caused by sweat, mostly located in your armpits. Deodorants usually work to only mask the smell of bacteria from sweat, while antiperspirants actually try to block sweat glands from releasing moisture. But the choice to use is up to you, so make sure to watch this video to get a better idea of which one to use!

Antiperspirant VS Deodorant

What causes body odor?

Sweat itself has no scent but begins to get broken down in the presence of natural bacteria that is on the skin. This breaking down process is what causes the unpleasant aroma of body odor.

Deodorant

Function: Uses chemicals to help eliminate the bacteria that is on the skin; usually containing a scented perfume to mask remaining odor.

Does not interfere with the body's natural sweating process.

Antiperspirant

Function: Uses aluminum salts to physically block sweat glands from releasing moisture. This reduced amount of sweat provides less food for bacteria that is on the skin. Like deodorant, antiperspirant also usually contains a scented perfume to help mask odor further.

Which one should you use?

The best solution is to try them both and decide which suits you and your body better.

Heavier sweaters may lean towards antiperspirant to reduce overall moisture released through the skin, whereas low to moderate sweaters may prefer deodorant strictly for the odor protection.

There are many 2-in-1 products that have deodorant ingredients as
well as antiperspirant ingredients.

Are over the counter deodorants and antiperspirants safe to use?

Most researchers agree that deodorants are safe for the most part but the stance on antiperspirant is more divided amongst experts. There have been studies linking the aluminum compounds found in
antiperspirants to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease but conclusive evidence has yet to be found. although the evidence is not conclusive, many people choose to avoid antiperspirants completely.

"So far, the FDA, the American Cancer Society, and the National Cancer Institute have said that no existing scientific or medical evidence has been found to link the products to breast cancer."
