Magic mushrooms is a term given to fungi that contain psilocybin, a hallucinogenic substance. A person can eat these magical mushrooms, prepare a tea with them, mix them with other foods or, as some people do to hide their bitter taste, cover them with chocolate and then eat them.
Approximately 30 minutes after one has been taken, they can begin their hallucinogenic effects. The perceptions of a person about color, sound and light, can change. It may seem that the surfaces move or undulate. The objects that move seem to have visible traces that remain behind them. Along with these effects, some people also develop nausea, muscle weakness, and other physical changes. Changes in perception and thinking can last between three and eight hours.
There are hundreds of different types of mushrooms that contain psilocybin and therefore have these hallucinogenic properties. These grow in large sectors of Mexico, South America, Malaysia, India and Indonesia. They can also be found in the southern United States and eastern Australia. It is suspected that they have been used for thousands of years in religious rituals, and the Aztecs definitely knew them.
In the 1950s and 1960s, it became popular in the United States to experiment extensively with this drug, along with mescaline and LSD, and because of the damage caused to many people as a result of bad experiences ("bad trips") , all these drugs became illegal.
Mushrooms containing Psilocybin are called magical fungi because some people have felt that their consumption of this substance has resulted in remarkable spiritual experiences. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in magic mushrooms for the treatment of mental disorders.
