Almond Milk - Is It As Healthy As You Thought?

Whole New Mom

Almond milk has become popular among vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. It's also a drink people into 'clean eating' favour.

But is it really as healthy as people think?

Almond milk is made from blending almonds with water then straining the mixture. It tastes nutty and creamy.

Almond milk is free from lactose and cholesterol, so is useful to lactose intolerant people.

There is a downside for our health, however. Dairy milk is the main source of iodine in our diet, providing 40 % of the RDI. Many teenage girls and some pregnant ladies are iodine deficient. Scientists tell us that almond milk contains a fraction of the iodine we need.

Almond milk is a poor source of calcium and a poor source of protein even though almonds themselves are protein rich.

So consider carefully whether to switch solely to almond milk. You could be less healthy than you thought.
