Has 'GLUTEN FREE' Become The New 'CHOLESTEROL FREE' Movement Among The Trendies?"

GLUTEN FREE.jpg
Just the other day, I was in a restaurant trying to figure out what to eat. After finally figuring out what I wanted, I decided to go for the soup and salad. I saw the letters 'GF' next to the salad on the menu and it got me to thinking.... When was a salad not gluten free? Lettuce, tomato, cucumbers? They've always been free of glutens.

So what exactly is gluten?
Primarily found in wheat, gluten is the substance which promotes the elastic texture of dough. It is a mixture of two proteins, but has been known to cause illness in individuals with celiac disease.

Sincerely, I don't mean to sound insensitive on this issue because I realize that celiac disease is real and when you are celiac or wheat intolerant, you should strictly avoid glutens at all cost!

But to be honest, there have always been individuals with wheat sensitivities and cases of celiac disease. These days, however, the movement has become almost popular and trendy.

Here's my point..... If you are not wheat intolerant, then you could be comprising your health because your fiber consumption could become inadvertently reduced by going gluten free. Certainly, there are other fiber sources out there and I understand that this is true, but not getting enough fiber can open up your risk for certain types of diseases, as well.

For those of you who are intolerant to wheat, then you have to deal with working through the fiber issue. But for those of you that aren't, you may wish to wish to look at all your options. It's also important to note that it's not always the gluten in the wheat that is the problem, but whether the wheat itself is grown organically and without the use of genetically engineered seeds. Of course, when it comes to your major health, always consult your physician regarding any concerns you may have on your overall health.
