Grand Fir

My favorite thing about this tree has always been the same: the scent.

The only time you really get to smell the scent of this tree is when you break off the needles or cut the branches. It smells like Christmas instantly.

For anyone who enjoys pine tea, this would be a good one to try.

Grand Fir is a favorite conifer by many because the needles have smooth rounded edges, and they are glossy dark green all year round.

This tree is so easy to grow in any climate with winter snow. It looks wonderful all year round because the deep green needles will remain for many years without falling off.

In the wild, Firs grow into tall, bushy, cone-shaped trees. The lowest limbs can grow very close to the soil, and remain green even covered in shade.

Plans

As far as bonsai goes, I really hate trimming this tree with any major pruning. It grows so strong on its own. Why mar its beauty?

However, to keep this tree small in a container, I will need to think about a style to prune it.

My plan since last year was to shorten it by focusing more growth to the strong upper branch. I did this by clipping the top to the level it is now.

This year, I really like the low young branches, and would like to see these thickened up more. Bonsai trees look best when the low branches are the thickest, like an old tree normally has.

My next major pruning will likely be a heading cut, to remove all of the trunk above the large upper branch. This will cause the tree to focus more grown on the lower buds, and a new branch will be forced to attempt to become the new trunk leader.
