Dear Hiveans,
I found the following quote in the book "Civilization and Capitalism 15th-18th Century" from Fernand Braudel (more info, Braudel_wiki) interesting:
Books were a luxury: as such they had from the start been subject to the strict laws of profit, supply and demand. A printer's materials had frequently to be renewed, the cost of labour was high, paper represented over double the other costs, and returns from outlay were slow. All this made the printing-house dependent upon money-lenders who soon controlled the distribution network.
The publishing world had its Fuggers on a small scale, as far back as the fifteenth century [...]
Since people have lived in advanced societies, information has been a tool, both for the individual to achieve freedom and for rulers to exert power. Technological advancements such as the printing press liberated information and led to a democratization, both of information and of societies.
While the Internet was a new advancement that opened access to information, it was step-by-step centralized (more info) via governments (China) and companies (Facebook, Twitter), leading to censorship, echo chambers, and political division/polarization.
I think that - especially in these times of disinformation - a neutral, non-political medium like Hive is of utmost importance. It is important that information (as well as misinformation) can be shared freely, though I find it worrying that Soviet/Putinist disinformation/propaganda is distributed over social media that seems to infest many minds. Nobody can have the power to absolutely know the truth (there is always a probability to err, as "to err is human"), and nobody should have the power to define what's right and what's wrong. If certain statements are muted, discussions about them are impeded; and thus, discovery of new truth is prevented.
In my opinion Hive is a cornerstone of a new paradigm in which there is no effective censorship, in which everybody can utter his/her opinion and an open discourse is possible. This open discourse could be especially important for the scientific community (guardian_scientificpaper).
From an individual perspective, the plethora of information provided by the Internet increases the relevance of filtering information (my approach) and of critical thinking:
Have a great day and choose careful what information to consume,

Liebe Hiver,
