Hey Leute,
made with Gemini
Was denkt ihr?
🇬🇧 English Version
Hey everyone,
made with Gemini
I'm a bit torn about which AI to commit to. Until winter of last year, I was pretty firmly on Team ChatGPT (the free model). Then I switched to Gemini Plus (€5 a month), and now I'm considering moving to Claude (about €22 a month).
I mainly use AI to create teaching materials, mostly in LaTeX. It just looks nicer.
With the free model of ChatGPT, it was always a struggle. Lots of errors (editing errors, calculation mistakes, etc.) and hallucinations. Sometimes, dealing with the hallucinations took more time than just doing it myself.
When I switched to Gemini Plus (a scaled-down version of Premium), I was actually quite satisfied. So far, I haven't had a single error in math worksheets or solution sheets, for example. But here and there, I do hit some limits. Gemini Pro struggles to create drawings or sketches in LaTeX, for instance with intercept theorem figures and especially labeling them. That can easily cost me an hour or so until it looks satisfactory.
Then, it can also happen that my Pro quota runs out and I drop into the weaker model—and that is just a total disaster. Recently, I wanted to prepare a lesson and assignment materials on the topic of logic gates. While trying to get some circuit diagrams and other errors fixed, I dropped into the weaker model and ended up stuck in a hallucination loop. I manually fixed a few major things and then just gave up. If I had the €22 subscription model, I might have been able to fix it with Gemini, but it's not a pleasant experience.
Here are a few errors:
Broken half-adder circuit diagram
Faulty logic gate overview. Although it might be quite fun to task students with finding the errors. Maybe you can spot them ;)
The same task twice. I only noticed this during the lesson 😅
Yesterday, I briefly tested the free version of Claude. Unfortunately, Claude wouldn't give me specific advice on which AI model and subscription would be best for me. When I told Claude about my problems with Gemini, it suggested I just drop the LaTeX code, and it would try to fix the errors using the free version. I was positively surprised by the result.
Even the broken circuit diagrams were corrected on the first try. I also like how Claude (similar to Gemini) can open a canvas where I can download the compiled PDF right away. Even if it looked a bit nicer in Gemini's version prior to the last update.
I haven't looked closely at Claude's other features yet. And I don't think everything is available in the free version anyway. But I find it quite exciting that you can work with Claude in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, for example. And I find "Projects" especially exciting. I've only read about it and watched a few videos so far. But if I understood correctly, Claude remembers all chat contents of a project. So I could probably open a project for each teaching unit, and Claude could surely create great performance tests and the like for me.
Oh, one more very annoying thing about Gemini just occurred to me. Every now and then, Gemini answers me in English, even though the prompt is in German and I've preconfigured it to answer in German unless requested otherwise. I also have the impression that the answers in those cases are of particularly low quality.
Well, those are the reasons why I'm currently very torn about which AI model and which subscription will give me the best value. What do you guys think?
